  • 80W-140 and lsd additive put in

i've had this annoying first gear acceleration only whine lately, and i assumed it be in the differential.

well, i talked to some pro's on the matter, they told me to put some thicker gear oil in the rear and that the zexel torsen, does in fact, need lsd additive.

so i pulled my axle housing cover off and looked at all the teeth i could see (even turning the driveshaft a couple of times to try and view all of them) and i saw no signs at all of wear in them. also, there were NO metal shavings or pieces attached to the magnet within the housing.

i put some gasket sealer around the housing cover, put the gasket on the sealer, then put the housing cover on and tightened it up pretty tight.

i then added the lsd additive, and that was followed by the 80W 140 gear oil...but guess what? the noise is still there... hrmm, i don't know what the answer is.

but, all the teeth looked good from what i could tell and as well, there were no metal scraplings in that housing that i could see (which is pretty odd, cause most housings have a bit of shavings). all in all, i'm happy that i think my rear end is in good shape.

however, i still can't find the damn whine!!!!

please, does anyone have any guess at what it may be? it seems to only be there in above 2k rpm's and below 3k rpms in first gear acceleration only; if i put SGS on, i can't hear it, and it's no where else but that first gear.

    please help me, arg...

bummer, i just changed out my rear diff oil for the 2nd time and not had any prob like that. i've been using mobil 1 75w oil and the GM black bottle LSD additive and it seems to be working fine. maybe try that combo? good luck!

I had a Whine just like you described on my 86 T/A. I took it to a shop (back in 1993) and the guy told me the pinion shaft shims were beat. Total came to $150.00 (remember, 1993) and the whine was gone. As I think of it now, he probably just put thicker fluid in. Oh well, the whine was gone so I was happy.

Maybe the shims don't totally line it up right. Who did the install???

Its just gear alignment, it can be shimmed to be quiet.
