• Six Speed in a V6.....

I have a 96 firebird with an auto trans. It's starting to die quickly. I plan on doing a LT1 conversion in about 6 months. I'd like to replace the trans now but not the motor. What is involved with installing a six speed on a 3.8? Then in six months would it still be adaptable to the LT1? Thanks guys.

i always thought that the manual trans used in v6 and v8 were the same, (dont they use the same 5 speed, and the same auto trans?) so wouldnt you think it would fit, (just asking) i could be wrong

          nooooope.

same tranny, different bellhousing as far as the 4L60E goes. i do not think the T56 will adapt to our cars, but if you are going to swap in an LT1 in a few months then it would mount up to that. reguardless it would be RIDICULOUS to swap in a T56 now and pay for all then only to have to do it all over again in 6 months when you swap an LT1. just wait til you get the LT1.

Transmission : All engines require a V8 transmission to bolt-up. No V6 transmission will bolt up to any V8 (with the exception of the 4.3L V6). T5 V6 transmissions use a different input shaft, and must be changed, along with the bell housing and clutch components.

should have worded it better, here "It's not worth it, get the engine too all at once if you don't want to keep messing with the transmission"

So if I want to upgrade to a t56 in the future all I have to do is unbolt my tranny at the bell housing and bolt in the new t56 to the bellhousing?? Is there any computer tuning or programing that will have to be done??

No. Input shafts I think are diferent, clutch assembly is different, Slave/master MIGHT be different, tailshaft is a different length. So youd need a couple parts changed, IF they worked. Is it possible...yes, practical... probably not, worth doing... thats up to you.

You'd have to install a minimum of 4.10's to push the 6th gear's ratio. And it will adapt. The retrofit costs about 3,000 dollars.

When it comes to mechanics and automobiles, Anything is possible. It's metal, you can shape it. It's a question of time and money.

My engine is back in my car...the T56 swap is my next major project. I will be starting it at the beginning of July. I will let you know how it goes.
