You have to change 2 gear sizes to feel a change. It isn't worth it to change one size unless you can get a free install or something really cheap. There will be a difference, it just wont be that great.

w/the richmond gears, all the breakin it says to do is drive 10-15 miles, then let them cool for 30 minutes, do that 2-3 times, i did that then drove for about another 180-200 miles, they whine the same as when i got them in new as they do now about 5-8k miles later, ive heard lots of different stuff about break in time, i just know the drive for 10-15 miles and let the cool completely down is a really important step...i normally drive at 74mph on the highway and ive gotten 27.8 MPG w/them best so far...

Well just got back from Jersey today.. Now for the difference in gas miles between the gears..

Take in fact that this was highway driving for 5 hours with 1 stop except for tolls at 55-70 mph the whole way..
With the 3.23's I used to get between 450-470 with a full tank cruising at 2000rpms at 65mph..
With the 3.73's I Got this trip 420 miles to the tank.. This was the 1st trip home with the gears but I averaged 65 mph @ 2350rpms..
I lost about 2 mpg with the gears.. around the city I havent really noticed any difference in Gas.. 3.73' are the way To go.. You get between 26-28 mpg on the highway and great acceleration..

I'm beginning to think that 4.10's are no biggie.

4.10's should put you right at 2500rpms at 65mph..

How can you honestley say you can compare gas mileage accurately with 3.73 gears and no programming? for one your speedo and odometer are off so you wont get a correct reading. there is no actual "breaking in" of the gears, your just supposed to take it easy on them for the first few hundred miles, its not like they seat in after so many miles or anything like that.

My bad I forgot to mention that I have the SLP speedo recalibrator hooked up.. I break in just about everything that has gears for a car.. If I get a new tranny I will put 500-1000 miles on it before I actually stomp it.. When I got my new motor I put 1000 miles on it before I started to shift above 3000 rpms.. And when I got my gears in I put 300-400 miles on them before I got on it.. I just feel safer knowing that they have had some time to wear in.. Thats just me.. I am sure there are some people that get a brand new 350 installed in there 1988 Iroc and crank it up and let it sit for 5 min and then just power brake it and burn the tires down to nothing with no more then 2 miles on the new motor.. This guy I worked with did this and he Burned all the oil from his motor due to improper ring seating and 2 days later his motor seized up.. I know gears and engines are totally different things but when it comes to me spending money on my car I want to make sure these gears will last for as long as I want.. Its better to be safe then sorry..

im kinda new to the gear swapen thing. someone said it kills top end, top end speed or power? i have a 97 auto and i was told i had 2.73's in mine, if i switched to a lsd and 3.42 would i still be able to hit 100?

you have 3.08's guy. 2.73's only come on v8's. they don't kill the top speed nearly that much. with 3.42's, you could still peg 120 with ease.
