• If you have 3.42's and auto-tap.. come on in!

It would seem that at least two people on this board, myself and nino, would like to know the best place to adjust, if any, the shift points... or at least a good place to start from.

From the "Do shift points really exist" thread...

quote:
Originally posted by nino:
my problem is i need to know how to adjust my shift points. i let them alone, but i am sure if i was to adjust them for the better, my ETs would improve. every shift has so many options i have no idea where to start. +/- 4 +/- 6 +/- 12 man i am so lost

    To add to this...

What is the mph that a the computer is supposed to shift for each gear in 3.42 geared cars?

How high can we safely rev on the stock valvetrain?

The rev limiter and the shift points go hand in hand. I think... but am not completely sure, that the transmission is set to shift at whatever mph that produces 5900 rpm in that gear. The rev limiter is set to 6000 rpm from the factory. Hypertech recommends setting the shift points so that they occur 100 rpm below the rev limiter.

The HPP3 installation instructiosn have a table with the common rear end gear ratio and the mph/rpm ratio. The values they have given are:

    1-2 1 mph = 137 rpm
    2-3 1 mph = 73 rpm
    3-4 1 mph = 45 rpm

Assuming that the transmission shifts at 5900rpm, that would mean that the mph it is set for would be ~43.1 mph for the 1-2 shift, ~80.8 mph for the 2-3 shift, and interestingly enough, it would mean that the 3-4 shift would occur at ~131 mph. Is thrid gear even good till 131? I've never been past 100, so I haven't payed attention to how many revs are left in 3rd gear, if any, when it reaches the limiter.

The only shift point that I had remebered reading on this board is the 2-3 occuring at 78mph on stock cars, however I don't know if that was correct. If so that means the shift is actually occuring at ~5694rpm.

So... can anyone shed some light on this subject?

EDIT: I changed the name of this thread because I need a favor. If someone with autotap could find out where the car actually shifts with 3.42's, I'd appreciate it.

my shift points are set at 6k rpm...
I used the gtech pro to get an idea as far as the Gs I'm pulling, and I forget what the numbers were, but shifting at 6k makes your Gs jump up when you switch gears. Shifting before then and you start at a lower number then taking it up to 6k... I hope that made sense to you :/ Basically, I figured it was better to shift at 6k then 5600, which was about where stock was.

hpp3 manuel said to make it so that you can run a full 1/4 without going into 4th. You should end the race right before the 3-4 shift.

Yeah, but with 3.42's and a V6 without many mods that will never happen...

Stock is around 5600 you say... hmmm.

i don't think so. when i a-tapped my car, i saw 58xx once at WOT, but it's hard to watch it well. so i think it's 6k.

well i found out through ls1 edit that a 2001 automatic ls1 is set at:

              1-2: 6000 rpms
              2-3: 6000 rpms
              3-4: 5900 rpms

i don't know why it would be any different for v6's; since after all, they do have the same torque/hp peak i believe.
