strange noise

hey everyone, every since i got my car i have had a problem with it at about 40 mph. When im cruising at 35-40 and im in drive (3rd) whenever i press the gass pedal a little to accelerate, I hear this weird grinding/gurgling noise. I can't tell exactly where it is coming from. If i press the gas harder it will just shift into second and not make the noise at all. Also i can sort of feel a vibration in the pedal when it does that sound.
Does this happen with anyone elses car, or has anyone fixed a problem like this. Also it has been doing this before i installed the B&B catback so i know that isn't the problem. Thanks

Dood, mine has been doing that for about 3 months now. Totally pissing me off. I’m about to take it to the dealer. I have a manual. Mine does is in all gears up to 3rd sometimes forth. Also mine does is at 5-40 mph. I haven’t noticed vibration in the peddle though.
It doesn’t always do it. And its not very loud is it? Iv been trying to record it but my vid camera wont pick it up.
At first I thought it was grinding. Checked all the fluid levels, all are good. Im starting to think its something rattling because im not seeing any performance loss. But it sucks, I tried to get my dad to hear it and he cant, my g/f thinks she heard it but not sure.

purdy sure its the torque converter when it locks up it is slipping, mine does it too, umm a shift kit will take care of it

look at your rpm gauge and see if it moves up a lil when the noise happens. that is what mine does

but, as you can see (if you read that thread) the guy who made my converter said that it is not the converter making the noise at all. in fact, i believe him. i don't know what the noise is, but i'm going to assume it's an exhaust rattling around, or at worst, a bad cat.

nothing to worry about i hope, cause i have the same problem.

Mine is not all that loud when it does it but it is still noticeable enough as to where people as "what was that sound" when they ride in my car.I just know it is not normal for a car to sound like it does. Never had the problem in first or second gear, it just does it in third and fourth, It is even worse going uphill. It has never made the sound at anything above 2200 rpm though. ya man, same EXACT problem i am having, and i'm almost positive it's probably the SAME EXACT noise. which makes it even odder...what the hell is this?

I just tried the little trick of slightly applying the brake when it was making the sound. It worked, the sound instantly stopped and the car stopped vibrating, and it all worked good like it is supposed to. I did this same thing about 20 times to confirm and every time same results. So in other words the car only makes this sound when the converter locks up at low rpms. Now what could be the problem?

no, that's not a trick what you did at all. when you apply the brake, the converter unlocks; if it didn't do this, then your car would die every time you came to a stop after the converter had locked up. no trick involved.

the fact that the noise goes away when you unlock the converter signifies, in fact, there is nothing wrong with your converter and/or your transmission bore. therefore, the problem is elsewhere.

what i found out today, is that my noise is coming from inside my intermediate pipe. the sounds is much like something is stuck within this pipe, and at low rpms, the constant flow of exhaust through the pipes causes this noise to occur.

magnus and i have our ideas that the catalytic converter could be the source of the problem, and as it's destruction takes place, the traces of the cat get left throughout the rest of the exhaust routing. and obviously, when certain rpms stir up these remains of the destroyed cat, they make noise.

that's merely an idea; we don't really know if it's true or not. HOWEVER, i do know the problem lies within my exhaust pipe, right before the I-pipe. to check, get under you car and wiggle the I-pipe and see if it makes a clanging noise; if it does, then that's your problem. otherwise, i don't know what to tell you. but you guys seem to be having the same exact problem i am having. who knows what the cause is? who knows the solution? it's all a guessing game here. if i ever get around to it, i MIGHT replace my cat, and while i'm at it, get the I-pipe reset so that whatever is stuck in it comes out.

my top end dies pretty hard at the track, so i'm nearly positive it's due to some form of restriction of flow within the exhaust. this noise helps prove that, since it is definetly coming from within my exhaust.

my car has been making the same noise for around the last 3 months. i thought that it was just the cold weather but it is very noticable! Around 50 mph usually sometimes around 50-60 mph it makes that noise and i can continue holding the noise if i keep the rpms and the mph at the same spot. If you let off the gas or get on it hard then the sound dies. Please tell us what the dealer says. Seems like another general problem with the f-body
