  • I want opinions on LSD

My 99 Camaro didn't come with LSD.(no y87 package) I want to add it, because I know it will help my 1/4 mile times greatly. Even with my Borla Cat-back exhaust I can barely break the 16 second mark.
What is the best LSD out there, or do they add about the same amount of performance?

you will probably want to get either takeoff gears and lsd from a trans am or z28, or get a whole new rear axle from one of the same cars.

Many people believe that the whole new rear axle is better since it can usually be had for a fair price and you get disks breaks. on the other hand, i found a Zexel torsen lsd and gears on ebay for less than 150. its your call

read up on gears and LSD in the Modifications Encyclopedia

Honestly it is probably better to get the V8 rear
You get LSD, gears, and disc brakes
Those parts alone are much better than buying the parts individually.
I wish I had done this back in the day

If all you are looking for is LSD, i would go with the zexel-torsen from SLP. Its a takeoff so its cheap. Install isn't that bad either. I was very suprised at how easy it was to install. Probably easier than putting in a whole new rear end honestly. And cheaper too. After buying the LSD, shipping, gasket, oil, lsd additive, I spent probably around $125 total.

Anyone have some good directions or guides for installing an SLP take-off LSD? I've had mine for a few months and i haven't put it in yet.

All 98+ come standard with rear disk brakes. I don't know why you'd want to get the whole axle other than that it might be easier for you to install yourself.

Agreed. You don't need an entire new rear end. Just get the SLP take-off LSD.

If you do the LSD swap...you might as well put gears in. Gears can be had for $140-160. When you pull the ring and carrier out you are already over halfway there. I would recomend getting all new bearings and super shims for the pinion and carrier so that you can get the backlash right. If you don't get the right amount of backlash then you could loose your rearend. Or you could have a real bad whine.(this goes for changing just the carrier too)
