  • question about slipping clutch.. confused

i raced my friend the other day. he has a 97 firbird. we bother have the same mods. stock gears n whatnot. both 5 speeds. we are both equal when it comes to driving stick.

the only thing.. he has a slipping clutch. and when i drove his car. it does slip.. but it the clutch doesnt slip passed 3500 rpms. and for some reason, with the clutch slipping like that. it pulls way harder than mine.

so we raced..and he raped me like an lt1 with mods would.

is it because its gripping and staying at 3500 rps? and it pulls the hardest at that rpm?

    im confused.

lemme see if i can explain this better...

ok..say he is in 2nd gear.. and slams it at about.. 2000 rpms... by time he is at 30 mph he is revv'n to 4grand and just staying ther etill he hits about 45mph. then it goes up.. same with 3rd gear and 4th. it pulls so unbelievably hard when it does that....

and i know some are faster than others... even a civic is faster than my car right now. cause i got rearended the other day and my exhaust is almost pinched shut.. but we raced before the accident.

Is it the tires or the clutch slipping? When I grab 2nd at the autocross, my rears light up at around 4k (spinning rears through top of 1st, grab and they still spin to 4k in 2nd). The revs then dip as the tires grip, though Im not sure if I just ride them spinning or if I let a touch off the throttle to let the rears catch up.
Clutch still holds, though ... I've heard that to test for slipping, run in 4th or 5th on the highway and floor it -- revs w/o speed means slipping.
But no reason he should pull harder, unless there's a higher friction with a slipping clutch or something.

definately clutch. btw. his clutch is toast right now. i put his car in first gear. foot off the gas.. then totally dumped the clutch. and it seemed as if he were still in neutral. usually u'd stall. did it in 2nd 3rd, and 4th gear as well.. same results.

it was definately a slipping clutch
