  • Loud Whining-is it a turbo? No just a crappy gear install

So last summer I had my rear end rebuilt due to awful whining at certain speeds/throttle percentages. I was dumb and bought cheap@$$ ($20) gears off ebay, along with a zexel lsd and complete rebuild kit. Well the podunk shop down the road put them in for like $250, but mustve fugged up because it is back this time all the way up to 70mph. Intollerable. I know I did it wrong the first time but now I just want to do it right. What gears (3.23 still) should I purchase and where from? Or do I need to replace the whole rear end? I hope my bearings and pumpkin can be reused hassle free.

cheap gears have next to nothing to do with sound.

the install has EVERYTHING to do with sound. i bought a $25 set of used 3.73s on ebay. took them to a shop that was recommended to me and paid $250 to have them installed and they made the worst noise in the world.

a few months later, i paid 500 to have the rear end rebuilt and reset with the same ring and pinion and they don't make a sound, even after 100 powershifts and a bunch of 1.8 short times at the track.

i don't know how to help you find the right shop, but i promise you that a $300 set of motives is going to howl just as loud as a free set if they aren't set up right.

I had a really nice install on my rear. I supplied everything and he put it together for 290. It whined the first few days and then I replaced the diff fluid and it has been quiet ever since.

So is the consensus that I should just have the rear end rebuilt with the same parts I just had put in?

you can probably rebuild with the same gear set (unless the wear pattern is too messed up). you will need new carrier bearings, pinion bearing, crush collar, shims, fluid, etc. the "deulxe" install kits that you see online usually carry all the parts and hardware you'll need.

my buddy installed some 4.10 gears in his camaro, but didnt i guess line it align correctly and it would whine. im lookin to install some 3.73's. also what does " open rear end" mean? a saw that on this guys site, "3.23 with open rear end". what does that mean.
