Still, if you're getting 30-35 MPG with 4.10s that are "tuned accurately", what did that mean you got before the swap?!?!

        I just can't buy it.

Mathmatically, I just can't buy it. Get a GPS or something and try that.

I still have the sticker for my 97 Y87 which came with a 3.42 rear end. I compaired it to the "regular" V6's and was surprised that my EPA mileage numbers were a couple of points (~10%)lower. I wrote this off to the ~10% change in gearing.

I know the 5 speeds are geared differently than my A4, but it would stand to reason that if I lost mileage with my 3.42's then your 4.10's should have the same effect unless you've got some really serious engine mods that are boosting your efficiency big-time.

You just have to baby then **** out of it. When I go over bridges and stuff (there's a bridge you go over right beside my school) I pop it in neutral for the way back down and keep there until I'm 5mph under the speed limit before I put it back in gear. I NEVER downshift to slow down, I NEVER use the a/c unless my car is stationary, I shift at 2500rpms, anything I can do to save gas I do it. Weight wise I have the rear seats, seatbelts, jack, spare and all that mess out, I NEVER completely fill the tank (hence why it started at between 3/4 and full), my car has no power ptions so it's already lighter than most along with it being a hardtop.

That does sound just a little too high, but not out of the question. 4.10s will help your milage around town because they allow the engine to pull away from a stop under less load (due to the increased torque multiplication of the gears). If he was claiming that much of an increase on the highway, I'd be first to call BS.

As stated above: "Fill it up, reset the tripometer, drive it, refill. Divide the trip reading by the refill gallons." Do that and get back to us so that you don't have to guess how much fuel was in the tank.

I think we may have touched on the problem here. Our gas guages are notoriously unreliable, especially above 1/2 tank. (I mean they are really, really bad.) That's why I ALWAYS fill my tank to the top to guaranty good mileage data.

A gallon of gas weighs ~5.8 - 6.5 lb (depending on additives and ethanol content), so 16 gals weighs ~100 lbs. You really aren't saving that much weight by not filling up all the way and it makes it really tough to know how much gas you really burned since the last fuel stop. ...and you have to visit the gas station more frequently.

Ok, I filled up this time with exactly 8 gallons so I'll let you know how it goes ;) (but this will include some highway miles because on Monday I'm going to tour the UTI campus and I have to go on the highway to get there.

where im getting that from is when my gas gauge is on the empty line , and the pump tells me 15.2-15.5 , never checked the manual.

Downshifting to slow down would probably save gas. When you downshift and let off the gas, the fuel injectors shut off (unless you're under 1500 RPM or so). By downshifting, you're basically turning the engine off. ;)

Very slight chance this is different on 99+, but I doubt it.

If you NEVER fill it all the way up, then you are not getting an accurate MPG. There is no way.
