  • transmission shifter question

ok a thought occured to me on my way home. does the shifter on an automatic (i mean the link between the tranny itself and the driver) is it all electronic or is there som part that physiccaly changes what gear its in. cause if tehre is nothing, how complicated would it be to hook up a puch button shift similar to the paddle slap shifting or tiptronic shifting.

i dont have the buttons on my steering wheel hooked up to anything and i was wondering if you could hook those up like shifters (if at all possible) i know its a bit far fetched but the concept is interesting to me and i wanted some feed back if anyone could help me out

well tiptronic isnt going to work... Remember that the shift lever in your auto only controls what the highest gear possible can be... not what gear it is in.

i know i tiptronic wouldnt work but i was basically talking about just getting rid of the stick and making it push button not necessarily a tiptronic if you understand me

well here is the deal, some time of auto-stick is going to require you to be able to tell the computer when to shift, there is no way to do that without major modification to the transmission, now if you are wanting to control when your automatic shifts you could go with some type of ratchet shifter, but there is no way without some extreme custom work you will ever have steering wheel paddle or button shifting.
