• Electric Water Pumps

Ok, so basically i got talking to this guy i met the other day when i came to my first hockey practice of the season. He's really into dragging and i was telling him how i'm planning to super my 3.8L next summer. he was telling me that if i didnt have the money to do it (which is my worry right now) to get some smaller stuff done, cuz it all adds up. he was telling me that electric water pumps free up like 20hp and that they're well worth the price. so heres my question: where do i start? i need to know also how much flow i should need if im gonna super it (nothing huge, just 6 or 9 psi). and as far as reworking the belt goes, how am i gonna deal with that, cuz i dont want everything to be unbalanced... anyways, any and all help would be awesome! thanks guys

20 HP gain seems a little steep.

lmperformance says 10-12, but they only have one for an ls1ls6:

then there is this one, that frees "7 engine HP"

im interested in this too. i think mine may have a leak? where is it located and how would you know you have a leak? anyways, sorry if i hijacked the thread. i hope im only helping..

i got mine from zzperformance and no the one on ebay is not the right one.

If you have the money its a good investment.

you will need a 4inch shorter belt. from zzperformance you can get a package where you get the water pump and for like.. 10 bucks extra it comes with the correct size gator back belt.

installation was a breeze.. but hell no on the 20 hp gain. maybe 10 tops!

and you will know if your water pump is going bad if your pullies start to squeek.

also if you have to fill up the radiator everytime you drive you may want to look around for leaks.

you will see water puddling under the pully of the water pump.

I was curious about doing this myself to but my worry is reliability and safety. With the belt drive water pump you usually have some warning if the pump is going. But what if something goes wrong with the electric one.
If the electric pump starts going bad does it give any warning signs or do they just stop working completly?

it will just stop working completely.. which is why i went ahead and bought a belt driven one as well as a temp. replacement incase my electric one has to go in for repairs.

The way i did mine.. i tossed the switch and got a relay to turn my pump on when i turned the key in th eignition.. also i attatched an LED to the relay to tell me if everything is getting power. if that LED goes out. i know im in trouble

damn, u guys r quick! thanks so much for all the help! i really appreciate it. so as far as the pulley system goes, i can just basically leave out the pulley from the old water pump and get a shorter belt?

i've got one too. The belt just goes around the wp. Anyone who has said anything about leaks either didn't clean the mounting surface, or used something that gouged the mounting surface. Be sure and use some permatex in addition to the gasket they provide for the best seal.
