• weld spider gera = posi traction?????

Hey all! A buddy of mine told me that if I had the spider gears in my rear axles that it would turn the limited slip into a posi. Does anyone know if this is true and possible. If so what are the pros and cons of this mod. Also if it can be done what harm if any woudl it do to my rearend. If this is a good mod that works I'll have it done when i replace my pinion seal because my rearend is leaking. I'm adding some Royal Purple rearend oil to it also. Supposed to let it move more freely to and add a few xtra horses. Well guys let me know somethin on this.

    Bad idea.

Posi (which is just GMs name for one kind of limited slip) locks your wheels together temporarily but unlocks so you can go around corners. The outside wheel needs to turn faster.

Welding the spider gears locks the wheels together permanently. The car will have to scrub the tires madly to get around any corner. Dangerous and will break an axle. _Very_ bad idea.

Its just like a spool. People run them all the time.

But I agree, dont weld your posi.

I had to do that years ago to my Nova when the spider gears exploded. It was the only way I could get home. :( After a few past of course!

a spool is designed to do it. It;s a solid mechined piece. The spider gears are not. They will break and take the diff out with it. If you want a spool or locker get a spool or locker.

You might be able to get away with this on a drag car if you trailered it there. It works great for drifting. It would absolutely ruin cornering/handling on the street.

My friend does that on his demo cars, but they run on dirt which allows the tire slip. I'm pretty sure he just welds open rears though, I don't think many of them had limited slip to start.

You've got a Y87, so you already have LSD. Like V6Bob said, Posi is just GM's type of Limited Slip.
