  • how hard is it to rebuild a auto tranny yourself.

Lol, just as the question asked. How hard would it be to rebuild my transmisssion myself. The only other experience i've had with trannys is dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter.

I've seen transmission overhaul kits for under 400 dollars, and if i could do the work myself, that would be great, it would save me a lot of money.
Would i be better having a shop do it, or would i be okay doing it myself. Also, how much would it cost for a shop to do it?
    thanks,
    Ron

its going to cost a grand at least, rebuilt to stock specs. I had mine rebuilt with a boat-load of upgrades and it came to about $2k +/- with $400 for a high stall converter on top of that.

If you experience is limited to changing fluid, i wouldnt undertake a tranny rebuild.... at least not one that I had to rely on as my D.D.

It wouldnt be easy, some things you have to worry about are clutch packs with the friction and discs, bands, valve body( check balls springs ect.) solinoids and checking clearances and endplay.

Its noithing you learn in a few hours its a art if you ask me, i suppose thats one reason i drive manuals cause there so much simpler.

            Good Luck

thats one of the few things that i would not mess with....
that and a gear install are better left to the pros

It would be great challenge. I have friends that have built up auto's for racing applications. You'd probably invest tne same amount into the special tools (to do it right) required for the job as you would having a professional redoing it or even buying one that is already "race ready". But don't take a generic rebuild for granted, as a few have already mentioned, quite a few of the parts and even tolerances are extremly delicate. Not saying anyone here can't do it, as the I've learned through my many experiances working AirCraft for the AF, "if you have tech data you can accomplish the mission". Long made short, I'd get qoutes and specifics to what want you from local rebuilders.

I would much rather spend like 400 and do a performance overhaul myself rather than spend 1500 to get somebody else to do it with stock specs.
Has anybody here rebuilt an auto tranny by themselves, or with a friend?
How much time and skill does it take?

My cousin built a Turbo350. From talking to him, I get the inpression there are lots of little pieces that can be improperly installed. So if you were EXTREEMLY carefully you might be able to do it?

Taking out/putting in the tranny yourself might save you a little bit of money. Mines already out and now I just need to buy the parts and have someone rebuild it

your not going to do a "performance" overhaul even yourself for $400. If you have never built a tranny before, and dont have the tools, your not even going to rebuild a reliable stock tranny.

for $400 and limited skill, I would say you are limited to dropping your existing tranny, and swapping in a used lower mileage one at best.
