  • differences between 3.4 and 3.8 m5

Hey all, today i went to finish my t5 swap, and the flywheel from a 95 v6 m5 wouldn't bolt up to my 98 v6? is there a big difference? the bolt pattern on my 98 has 8 bolts, while the flywheel from the 95 has 7?

7 bolts? Oh damn, I think you got a 3.4 fly wheel if im not mistaken, if I remember correctly 3.4's require 6 or 7 bolts on the flywheel. You have to change to an manual flywheel when swapping from auto to manual trans.
    Good luck

yeah it's the manual flywheel that has like 7 bolts i think it is. i think i got the 3.4 one =\ if so, anyway i can get that to work? i kinda really short on cash to go and purchase a 3.8 one ? also, are the bellhousings different too? if so, i guess i need to get a new belhousing also. =\

in other words, i have the whole T5 assembly from a 3.4. now, what differences would there be between the 3.4l t5 setup and a 98 3.8 t5 setup? i already own everything, so i'm hoping some way this wasnt a waste of money.

the 3.4 flywheel has 6 bolts, the 3.8 has 8
the 3.4 bellhousing has the starter on the left, the 3.8 on the right
the 3.4 t5 has a slave cylnder that moves a arm to operate the throwout bearing, the 3.8 has a hydralic throwout bearing(the slave cyl. is pary of the throw out)
other than that they are the same, the 4th gen t-5 is a modified FORD unit(the square bellhoue to tranny pattern tells us that, the chevy pattern is rectangular) its the 320 ft lbs. wc v8 unit, with a diffrent first & seconed and gm input & output splines

yeah the guy told me it was pulled from a 97. well, i found out hard way when i went to bolt up the flywheel and it doesnt match! My car's now sittin' in my driveway on jacks , no tranny and a hole for teh shifter. oh well, craig might be able to hook me up with the parts except the flywheel, cuz ill justp ick one up locally. Also, i'm assuming i'd need a new clutch also? I dont know if itll bolt up, someone said it wouldnt ?

The bolt patterns for the pressure plates are different between the 3.8s and 3.4s. If the pressure plate you have bolts up to that flywheel, then you are SOL. I looked into it when I was doing my manual conversion.
                Sorry.

alright. does anyone know if the t5 tranny from a 94 is usuable on a 98? i mean, with the hydrolic bearing and all. where does that get bolted to?
