Ive been thinking about getting and lsd and some 3.42 gears. i have an 02 camaro. isnt my rear end a 7.5 in 10 bolt? what are my options? who makes good lsd's? whats the diiference between a lsd and posi? because i see alot of limit slips say posi too or vice versa whats up with that? thanks in advance!
Posi is GM's name for a limited slip differential. They're the same thing.
You should be able to find a used Zexel Torsen T-2 for about $150 on ebay. Gears will probably be around $200, depending on how good of a deal you find.
Any differential made for a V8 F-Body will fit, so you could look for those as well. ;)
3.42 posi made SUCH a difference on my car..and yes you have a 7.5 10 bolt (some will say 7 5/8 i think it is?..your car will accept these also..same thing)..also you need to know how many axle splines you have..for example i need a differential that would fit 28 spline axles..i dont know if all 3.8 V6 Camaros have 28 spline axles..and if you have ABS dont forget the 3 series ABS reluctor ring!
Unless you do a good bit of highway driving, I'd recommend 3.73's. This is coming from another M5 owner who went the 3.23 to 3.42 route.
Yes, and make sure whoever you get to put in the gears knocks your ABS reluctor ring off your open carrier and installs it on the new lsd before installing it.

I would vote for 3.73's period. Or 4.10's as long as you aren't scared like many other people on this site.
With 3.73's or 4.10's you will more than likely see an increase in fuel economy on the highway because you will be cruising closer to your peak torque RPM. Little G went from 3.23's to 4.10's, and IIRC, he gained almost 1.5 MPG in mixed driving.
since you have the M5, I would recommend 3.73's as well. Even myself with having gone to 3.42's I wish I went 3.73's. I was being conservative at the time thinking about MPG, but I only do less than 6k miles a year. big deal.
If you are dead set on 3.42's, there is a dealer near Philly that has several 3.42 rear-ends with posi going for $150. if you have access to a truck, it might be worth the gas to drive out there and swap the whole assembly in (easy, do it yourself), rather than try to find someone around here who is knowledgeable enough to do a gear-install. took me a while to find a guy and $300 in labor.
Definitely do the gears/LSD, makes a huge difference in our cars. I got mine off eBay for $20, they were a take-off set from an SS in perfect condition. Start calling around to some places for install prices. I got quotes anywhere from $175 all the way to $800 to install a set of gears. I dunno how far you are from Baltimore, but Fbody Central was the place that quoted me $175. I ended up paying about $300 at a place nearby since baltimore is a little too far for me.
Depending on how many miles are on your car, you may want to get a rebuild kit also, it will have all your shims and bearings for installing the new differential. You may be able to reuse your old ones though since your car is a 2002. I got it anyways for piece of mind.
Also, there is a difference between posi and LSD. Your looking for an LSD; more than likely all the ones your finding that fit our rearend are LSD's, people call it posi out of habit, even though there is a difference. Both will spin both tires on launch (ie - 2 fat tire marks from a burnout) but they act in different ways around turns.Basically, the posi locks both wheels together, but the LSD can vary the speed going to both wheels. Obviously there's more to it than just that, but that's the basic difference b/n them. Zexel Torsen is the most common LSD for our cars (they come standard in Z28 and Y87 rears) , Eaton and Auburn also make nice LSD's as well.
EDIT- here is a link to Domonic's website that explains the difference between all the differential types http://www.angelfire.com/my/fastcar/diffey.html
His information is a little different from what I just typed, so I'd go with his over mine. Dom's info relates more to our cars, whereas my information is from a powertrains class I took in school that related more towards tractors...
That's just what you're looking for. You already have the same gear ratio so those aren't really needed, but it's an excellent price for the diffy alone.
sweet. im not really worried about the gears right now. i can get it put in for cheap cuz my bro works at a shop. so maybe summer ill get some 3.73's. i dont really have the money for them.
