is it bad for the tranny if you stall with a stock converter? or does it only hurt it with the add-ons ?

The only real damage a higher stall converter is going to do to drectly do to your tranny is to cause the fluid to run hotter. For those thinking about a high stall converter, think about an auxilary tranny cooler too. The added friction from the impellor trying to spin the turbine is what heats up the fluid. With a higher stall converter, it is a good idea to check and change your tranny fluid more often that normal.

I'm looking at getting the Comp. Cams GT1 cam. I've been looking at torque converters also but dont know if I need one. I've read that you should get one with a larger cam but I get mixed opinions.

Should I get one with the cam? I dont have slicks and don't really want to waste the tranny.

Stall converter is a good thing, if you can't hook you're wasing it though. Only thing is even after shifting out of 1st at WOT you "should" be in your power band if you get a properly matched converter, which would help even if you didn't have slicks.

I've been though a LOT of converters
            Stock
custom built 2800 (broke the lock-up)
            Stock
PI Vig 3500 (shredded every spline inside it and took my tranny with it)
            Stock
Yank 2800, converter I'm running now, haven't driven on it much, but I like it a lot.

If I break the Yank like I have all the others I will be going with an Edge converter.

I have ran a tranny cooler since my first converter was installed and I believe both times I've broken the aftermarket ones have been a defect.
