After reading a couple of websites refering to a shift improvement mod on 94 and 95 Z28's, I tried it on my 94 V6. The sites said that while the V8 Pontiacs had a button for more aggressive shifts, the Z28 did not. However the function was still in the computer and could be activated if wired up. So I took off my passenger side kick panel to check if the connectors matched the sites and it did. There were the two multi pin connectors I needed, each had an un-matched wire from the computer running into the connector; meaning that the other half of the connector had an open slot with no wire. I rigged something up quick to see and as the websites stated, by grounding one of the wires the function would be activated and using a test bulb on the other wire I could see that it worked.
My problem is that I didn't drive it before I did a more permanent install. I saw that the light came on and figured I was in the clear. Well, after finishing the install I took off to test it out and not only did the shifts not change, but starting from a stop was very sluggish
. After a little driving I realized what was going on. I didn't get a performance shifting mode, but I did activate Second Gear Start :D I guess they used the same pins and activation method for the two because it worked like a charm. Not quite the end results I was hoping for but it does work.
This may have been discussed before, but after searching I couldn't find anything so I figured I would share my failure/success.
So, if any one would like to enable second gear start in there car, it's possible. The Z28 pages said it only works for 94 and 95, I don't know if this carries over to the V6.
