  • Grinding noises, not a good sound

I've noticed over the past couple of days that my car is making a grinding noise from time to time and its getting worse and worse... I don't really know how to describe it other than it sounds like it is coming from the back and underneath of the motor, sounds almost like metal on metal. Starts whenever I put it in drive, seems to get faster with RPMs, but it doesn't do it all the time, and doesn't do it at all while idling in park. Any ideas what could be making the noise?

Could be the driveshaft and/or connecting u-joints. Have you ever ripped it into reverse, then threw it into drive, because that could really screw up your driveshaft components.

Nope, never ripped into drive straight out of reverse. Not the best of drivers but I know better than do something like that. Anyone else got any ideas?

HAve this problem fixed it twice qand i chew motor mounts i think it's the driveshaft bu tnot sure only when the engine is under load it does it. It comes and goes and sometimes feels liek a foot massage check your engine mount if you find out let me know i would be interested in fixing mine as well

Anybody else got any ideas? Let's consider what Ironman said... if its does happen to be something wrong with the driveshaft, how much would I be looking at to get it replaced? I've seen lots of people talking about aluminum driveshafts, what is the benefit of one of those other than weight reduction? Not that I know its a problem with the driveshaft, but if it is just curious as to what kinda options I'd have to replace it.

Take the drive shaft out and put it in drive and rev it up. If no noise then you got a $20 1 piece steel DS coming.

                Pinion Bearings?

When i got off the highway i blew 2 out of 4 pinion bearings in the rear end and it was a HORRIBLE griding noise.

All i can say is get all ur bearings checked out.

Only thing i can think of right now.
