• Zex torsen diff going in tomorrow... need tech advice!!!!

I am installing a SLP takeoff ZT rear diff. I am not sure if it has instructions or not, so I am asking you guys for important data, since I can't find my haynes manual.

See if you guys can't find this stuff somewhere:

Backlash for ring & pinion
Torque spec for pinion nut
Torque spec for carrier
What type of oil does it take
size of pinion nut(so I can buy the right tool)
Torque spec for ring gear

I didn't see any of this stuff in the tech database, that is why I am asking. I really appreciate your help and if I should have seen
this data somewhere else, sorry for being a rock.

If you are not changing gears, there is no need to mess with the pinion. Follow the directions in the first link. It is a messy job but it is an easy one too. I did mine and it isn't hard at all. Re-assembly can be a pain, driving those spacers back in sux, but it can be done. Some say you need a new ABS (reluctor) ring, but if you are careful you can re-use the old one. I did on mine, mainly because I am building a new rear in my basement and didn't want the expense of a new ring.

Enjoy two wheel burnouts. :D

I just did mine monday nite! I followed directions I found somewhere on the net. In a nutshell:

Undo the cover bolts, pry off the cover. If you're lucky like me, some jerk installer had put like 5 gaskets on there -- scrape it all off. I drilled a drain plug into the cover while I was there. Then undo the block screw/rod (i could only fit a wrench), pull out the block, push in the axles, and then pull out the axles. Unbolt / remove the bearing caps.

Now the fun part -- when you read "pry" out the diff, just laugh. I tried everything I had in my house, property, garage, etc. Eventually, sticking the picklefork in and jumping (sideways) on it with both feet finally got the diff out.

Good luck figuring out how to hold the diff while you unbolt the ring gear bolts. NOTE: Oppositely threaded. IF you've got an impact gun, you're in luck. If not, stick something through the diff, step on it with 2 or 3 feet, and then unbolt. Lightly tap off the reluctor ring. Assembly is the reverse of what's above. I put in everything except for the right side spacer first, which I hammered in later. Smelly, yet straightforward (Difficult for sure at times, but again straightforward) install.

Good luck!

I talked to a guy at SLP and he said i would need 2 new carrier bearings is this true? How much does that ABS reluctor ring cost, what about the carrier bearings? I am planing on doing this mod in the next month.

The carrier should already have the bearings installed on it. He may have meant the races the bearings fit into...also known as the caps. If you do not have new ones, smart advice would be to get them. I didn't have that issue, I had the ones that came with the Auburn I installed. I will need new ones for the Zex I am putting into the new rear end though. Hope they are not too much.

I got the slp install kit along with the diff, so I have all the bearing and gaskets I need. I am not changing gears, So I do not need to mess with the pinion stuff? what about torque specs for the ring gear and housing cover?

THe install kit was for a new gear set so it had a few things I didn't need. It was $119.95.

The bearings that came on my new carrier were damaged so I had to replace them. They were suppled though.

The new diff went in with no problems and is performing well to date. I autocrossed with it yesterday and it held up. It is a pretty cool piece, well worth the 220 bucks I spent to get it in.

You only need to buy a reluctor ring if you are going from a series 2 carrier to a series three in which case SLP sells the reluctor ring for 19.95
