LSD: What can I expect on the track?

I'm new to the mechanics of making your car faster, so please bear with me.
I want to put 3.42 gears on my 95 Bird. I know this will help on my low end, but what about an LSD? Will an extra $400 plus labor for the LSD improve my ET, or will it be about the same as the open diff? [img]graemlins/dunce.gif[/img]

the LSD will be way better for traction, reason being it will spin both wheels instead of just one like an open rear does, and you dont have to buy the $400 auburn, you can get the zexel-torsen for 100 bux at SLP, it will do the same thing and cost way less...

3.42's and lsd have been known to drop up to .5 in the quarter... if you started with 308's

Its worth every dime, and I recommend the Zexel Torsen for $99 (takeoff part, worth $725 from GM) over the Auburn for reasons listed on my website.

You literally double your traction handling capabilities at the launch, and cornering improves due to the nature of the torsen.

Great choice for the V6.

I had my rear redone by GM for $120 - I wouldnt pay any more than that. This was just labor cost, I provided all parts [img]smile.gif[/img]

you'll get a ton of traction from it, assuming u don't get any wheel hop, but that's a different subject alltogether. i had 3.42's w/ an open diff. to begin w/ and I could break traction very easily w/ the stock 235-55's. then i got kumho's, and i got a little better traction, but not much. when i got my lsd, it helped soooo much. better traction around corners and off the line. now i have wheel hop probs cuz of the amount of power I'm putting 2 the wheels, so i gotta do some more suspension stuff b4 i can lower my times a little more.

i'd just get the posi and stick with the gears ya have,sence ya have a 3.4 it comes with 3.23 in the rear

sheesh listen to this guy hehe [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img] get yourself some 3:42's it wont make as blazing a difference from the 3:23's but its still worth it. I love the pull my car has now.

Does lsd work better w/ a smaller gear ratio rather than a higher 1? ex. I have 3.73's...would it work as good for my car, or better for a 3.4 w/ 3.23's ?? If so why?

it doesn't really matter what engine or how much power you are putting down. LSD will be beneficial to all of them.

Think of it this way. Right now when you launch with your open-diff. all the power is being directed to the passengers side rear wheel. This makes launching less effective because all of the power is being directed to that ONE wheel.

with the LSD, the power will be directed towards both rear wheels making your launches better.
