  • Anyone using a 1 pc. steel D/S?

    I have one sitting here in my garage, but I'm not sure if It'll free-up any hp by installing it. I'm trying to save my money the best I can for a house, so I'm not gonna be buying an aluminum d/s anytime soon.

    I know I read somewhere they caused premature wear on seals, but I cant find it now.

    I think 99 and on use a 1 piece DS, so I am not sure what the difference is. It could be in the shaft it self.

    It is lighter by 10-15lbs.

    Would it free up HP? It seems like somebody posted a .10 drop in E.T.

      From the section on the '99 cars:

      "There is a bulletin out warning that excessive speeds (excess of 125 mph) can cause the tail shaft extension seal to vibrate out and allow all of the transmission fluid to leak out. The fix as recommended by GM is to replace the steel one piece driveshaft with the steel two piece version from earlier years; the fix recommended by many automotive enthusiasts is to replace the steel one piece driveshaft with an aluminum one."

        Hmmm, I'm not planning on traveling over 110mph anytime soon, so I may give it a shot. As long as the 1 pc steel is lighter than the 2 pc that I now have, I should be ok.
        I'm wondering if it was just from 99 cars? I have a 96, and an M5.

          I think it's because they started putting the one piece steel in the automatic cars in '98.

          So by '99 they had a bulletin on it...

          Plus in '99 the one piece was in all the cars, not just the automatics.

          I ran my stock steel one-piece for 4.5 years in my '98, then upgraded to the aluminum.

            I lost .6 and picked up almost 3 MPH. Nothing changed but the drive shaft.

                I don't think the 1 pc steel is significantly lighter than the 2 pc steel. I beleive my mechanic told me that the two peice is ~22 lbs..the aluminum driveshaft however, is about 10-12 lbs...so that is where you would see weight drop. I don't think the one peice steel is much, if any, lighter than the 2 peice.

                  it makes a hell of a lot of difference. bliggida will admit to that. that is why his car is so fast - cause its stock.
                  6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

                    Heck yeah! haha. I did however notice an actual difference in performance going from two piece steel to one piece steel. When I weighed my stock driveshaft - the two piece, it was around 25 pounds. The one piece steel was around 18 or less.

                    If I had the opportunity at the time to go with 1 piece aluminum I would have done that. Maybe some other time.

                    Its a good addition to your car for taking up about 30 minutes. If I take a stopped corner in second gear now, WOT, I will roast them to the point of smoke. Could only chirp second and usually bog before.

                      I think the tech page is wrong. I have a 99 camaro with an electronic throttle and a two piece driveshaft. If the previous owner did replace it in order to travel over 125mph regularly, then we have some seriosly tough built cars, 'cause mine is still immaculate.

                            I think when GM has an excess of one thing, your car can get it.
