I seem to remember hearing somewhere that carbon fiber is good for twisting, but if something hits it it'll shatter. I.E. it can not break under high HP, but if a rock flies up from the road and hits it, it's toast. I don't know if this is true or not, but that's what I've heard.

You say this is a daily driver car. I personally would not get a CF driveshaft because of this fact. This thing I've heard (about the shattering) is what made me decide on getting an Al drive shaft (when I finally get one). If you're trying to decide between the CF driveshaft and the TC, I'd get the converter.

Like I said, this is just what I've heard, so you may want to do more research into this. It may/maynot be true.

this is true, but how big of a rock would it have to be, and how fast would it have to be flying. the only way I could see a rock hitting the driveshaft is if u plan on driving down a dirt road.

You can get an aluminum driveshaft and a torque converter instead of a carbon fibre (fibre is stronger than fiber ;) ) driveshaft.

450 for TC, and how much for a Aluminum driveshaft? I'd want the lightest one I could find that can still safely handle launches. also, add in the labor for installing them, and what could the grand total look like?

get the TC and pay someone to install it, if your parents are willing to spend 750-800 for a DS then its not gonna be much different spending about the same for a TC...besides the DS will not help u much anyways, the TC is worth .3-.5 int he quarter...

well, as far as the price of the Al driveshaft, according to the mod encyclopedia...
quote:
GM 1LE Aluminum - the 1LE driveshaft is 2.75" in diameter. GM part number is 10085375 and cost from www.gmpartsdirect.com is $212. It weighs 10 lbs.

RKSport Aluminum - this driveshaft is 3" in diameter and features an internal vibration dampening system. This driveshaft is IHRA legal for Competition Eliminator and Pro Stock classes. Part number is 010210350 and price is $360 from RKSport. Weight is 10 lbs.

These are the only two listed there. There probably are others (such as the LS1 driveshaft which is also Al), though. Sorry I can't help you with an install price.

Parents are not buying me this stuff. if I get a B-day card and $100 from them, I'm lucky. This is all my money being spent from what I've been saving up.

i heard the 1 le AL driveshaft wont add anything but it'll free up about 5-10 rwtq and at most 2-5 rwhp....a DS would be easy as pie to install. F all that carbon fiber business, just get the 1le AL DS.

My tranny cooler was like $60 bucks :D
My dad and I installed, plumbed it, everything :D

I'd listen to these guys, doing your own work saves a lot of time and money. But if you are really against yourself doing this, I'd get the 1LE shaft to save a little extra money to put towards a good converter...
