Oh yeah, you are under estimating the amount of gearing you need.
With a .80 overdrive (not even as much overdrive as your 5th gear now) with 4.11 gears, you are good for 136 MPH. Which is 21 MPH faster than what you are able to go with the speed govenor.

u haven't been reading closyly enought
i don't want a factory geared T56...i found out that the LT1 T56 will bolt on. now that i know it will fit easily enough i am wondering about the gearing specs.
i want custom gearing anyway...it's not going to be build for cruising...please don't offer me anymore advice bliggida...there won't be dual overdrive...they will be true gears
in road racing, i need quick acceleration with a good top end. i don't care what the factory specs are...i need to know what to change it to. i don't think anyone has done what i'm trying, so i guess it will just be trial and error.

no...i believe you would only need to enter a M5 VIN into your pcm. someone may correct me on this, but i already have an M5 so...

I'll be running aftermarket gauges. sorry...i'm just working around the problem.

I know exactly what you are talking about. And if you are attempting to swap in custom, one-off gears. (No aftermarket gear choices for a T56) then you are absolutely right, the transmission will not cost 3,000. It will cost closer to 6,000.
If you are all about acceleration and having a top speed - with no overdrive. Then you have a range that would probably be a
4:1 first gear
3:1 second gear
2:1 third gear
1:1 fourth gear.
Anything more than a 1:1 is an overdrive. So if you do not have an overdrive you will be limited in your top speed dependant on your rev capabilities and your final drive ratio. With 4.11's you'll peg 136 MPH revving conservatively.
My guess, is that you don't know what you are talking about and are confusing "No overdrive six speed" with a sequential gear 6-speed. They are completely different. And if that is what you are after. Once again, the T56 is not for you. You want a Richmond road racing 6 speed. You can buy one of those in the form you would need for about 3 grand. Where as a custom T56 that no one has ever done before would cost you double, and won't be as strong as a Richmond.
But anyway, to answer your original question. The bolt pattern at the engine is completely different on the V6 and V8, so the V6 and V8 trannies will not interchange. There is nothing to bolt to. Why a T56 transmission will cost you 3 grand, is because a company has to build a custom fabricated bellhousing and then drill it with the V6 bolt pattern. You think custom work like that comes cheap? Just try pricing out ONE...just one of your custom gears (say first gear) for your racing T56. Don't be suprised when the gear cost 500 itself with another 500 in labor.

bliggida...here is a site w/ a T56 T5 replacement...it's $2150...I'm sure they could sawp out the gears i need there...now that i know the tranny will fit i can gear it any freakin way i want...for less than $3000...this topic is shut...do some more research...i hadn't done any...that's why i posted...turns out the only help was Dojo telling me to search...i suggest you do the same.

I'm sure if you contacted him you could get the specific details.
there are a couple gearsets that are readily available for the T56, the old 93 LT1 gears, the 94-present .5 od gears, and then the Viper/Cobra gearset. Along with the Z06 gearset.
all the info i have found out about the T56 says you cannot just change one gear, you need to change at least a couple, if not the whole gearset. Gearsets are NOT cheap. and all gearsets might not work with any standard inputshaft, output shaft, ect. (i am not sure, never really researched more into it, after pricing out EXPENSIVE gearsets)
The T56 is NOT a performance tranny, Go with a Built 5 speed, (tremec, ect)
the 03 cobra version of the T56, has a .62 6th overdrive, the T5 in the 5.0 i work on, has a .63 overdrive. (T5-Z) so no reason for a 6th gear in the 03 cobras... and they still get hit with the gas guzzler tax.
So unless you go with the .5 OD version, (with a sucky 1st gear ratio) having 6 over 5 gears is worthless for ANYTHING.
for a race car, i would rather have a different tranny the the T56 i currently have in my car.
Ryan.

Guys, just in case you didn't know. All Chevy small blocks are built with *suprise* a small block chevy bolt pattern. An LT1 is a Small block Chevy with modern fuel injection. It's still a small block, it still has a small block bolt pattern.
Your V6's are a corporate bolt pattern. Buick/Olds/Ponitac. Our bolt pattern will match up to all of the FWD trans-axles, like the 4T65-E being using in the Impala, and Monte Carlo...With a 3800 II engine. Our T-5's and 4L60-E's look and have the same internals as the V8 counterparts, however the bolt pattern is different. It's corporate. It will not fit up to a T56 of any year without modification. If modified, LT1, or LS1 makes no difference they will bolt up...with modification.
If you want an LT1 T56, I'll sell you one for 1,000.00 but it will not fit without custom fabrication. An LT1 block is not like an LS1 and got its own block design, its a Small block Chevy. (the LS1 retains a small block chevy bolt pattern as well, although the block itself is different)
Anyway, its on no importance, its not like you are really going to go through with it. (Nor 30 pounds of boost) There are only two of us on the board that plan to swap in a six speed within the next 6 months to a year. But both of us know exactly what it requires.
But hey, what do I know right. Go get an LT1 T56 (that won't fit) and if you ever did get it to fit, you will have spent double any price I quoted you for custom gears, which you won't buy. And then, end up using the stock gearing, which will do completely the opposite of what you want, which is give you so little gearing your car becomes a complete dog, and chugs.

no way he bolted a lt1 bellhouseing to a 3.8,the lt1 bell houseing is about 2-3 in wider than the 3.8's bellhousing pattern...
now he may have bolted a t-56 to the 3.8's t-5 bellhousing, but that wouldn't work to well in a car sence the t-5 bell is deeper that the t-56 (you'd need a shorter driveshaft and tourqe arm,and the shifter would sit farther back)
A tremic t3550 will more or less bolt in where a t-5 was, and is about $1200-1500 brand new
