• tranny park release button

first let me say hello. This is my first post, hope to be here often.
On my daughters 98 Camaro automatic tranny, the first time that she tries to move the car in the morning, she has to fight to get the top mounted park release button to go in, so she can get to drive or rewind. It only happens on the first start of the day, and since this is south florida I can't blame the cold.
Has anyone come across this problem before?

Hello and welcome to the board. My sister had a 95 firebird that did the same thing. But it only did it when it was really cold. My bro-in-law hated it because he worked nights and she worked days and she'd have to wake him up and have him put it in gear.

Ok bro this happened to me before, and no one knew that the hell it was at first. The trans shift solenoid is broken and will need to be replaced. DO NOT FIGHT WITH IT TOO MUCH, I did and ended up loosening the bolts on the left side of the shifter and now it sometimes is sticky. That comes from trying to force it down. The name I gave ya for it is due to checking, trans brake solenoid, tans shift... something along those lines. Brake park solenoid perhaps. Anyways you will need to take it to a shop that can do electrical stuff. Theyl need to run a diagnostic and then replace the part. Hope this helps yah mine was like that for about 3 months because no one would help me. It will cost 70-100 bucks.

quote:
The "neutral safety switch" or "Brake-Park Shift Interlock" (they are refering to the same thing) is located under the shift plate (the plastic where it tells you what gear you have put it in). You need to remove that piece, then you will see a small cylinder shaped black thing on the left hand side with a small 2-wire wiring harness on it. Take the wire harness off the cylinoid, and then try shifting it.

If it shifts fine, and you just want a cheap fix, you can leave the cylinoid unhooked. Won't hurt anything.
