  • Why does my 1-2 shift feel like I have a transgo shift kit?

So i'm driving to the beach yesterday and my car just decided to do this new thing. It's exactly like the topic says, when it's shifting to 2nd gear (I have an a4 by the way) it throws you back kinda like the transgo shift kit feels. In regular drive it doesn't do it as hard. I've done a few things to my car in the past few days but it wouldn't have effected it.

I did a flowmaster catback about 300mi ago
    Reset my PCM 200mi ago
    Changed oil 150mi ago

I don't know, it's not doing it this morning, it's weird, anyone have this happen to them?
And I don't have the transgo shift kit, only if someone put one in my car while I was sleeping, lol.

My guess would be the PCM resetting. The car learns how you drive and acts accordingly. After a period of time when it gets an overall idea of how you drive, it compensates for future driving in a simillar manner. If you drive hard, chances are the computer will tell the tranny to shift harder between 1st and 2nd to help promote the tranny's life.

My car does the same as well. Mostly when it is cold. I was thinking maybe there was a TSB out for the harsh 1-2 shift. Anyone else here about this?

I think it has to do with the PCM resetting. However it looks like it only does it on really long trips after a while. Because I'm driving it now and it doesn't seem to be doing it. Now it's only once in a while, but before it was doing it all the time. It's weird.

your tranny is slipping. after it slipping for a while it starts to add more fluid to compensate for it. so when you're done driving for a long time, it still thinks it slipping in normal traffic.

sorry dude. you'll be getting that SES light soon..

my '99 does the same damn thing. i believe there is a tsb out for this situation. you get a redesigned valve body. i have had it for 36,000 miles -- no problems.

mine was doing the same, but i never got an ses ligth. it was a hard shift from 1st to 2nd, get your computer scanned and you would see the p1870 code. the bad thing is that i ended up paying $1500 for a transmission rebuild :( .

there's (atleast) two different harsh 1-2 upshifts. one, is when the transmission is cold. this seems to be harmless. no idea if a shift kit would help this at all. my car has always done this. just seems to be a characteristic of the 4l60e.

the other harsh 1-2 upshift is caused by a known problem with the modulated tcc apply. its causing wear in the valve body and the pcm sometimes will see what it believes is a slipping torque convertor (this is especially a problem when the transmission is very hot). the pcm commands maximum line pressure so you get harsh 1-2 (and 2-3) upshifts. it also sets code p1870 (but you dont get a warning light unless it sets this twice in a row). the maximum line pressure 'mode' is reset next time you start the car. there is a tsb for this, and they give you a modified valve body. i believe most shift kits just eliminate the modulated part of the tcc apply. search for p1870 for the full tsb in this forum.

A cold tranny shift is not harmless.

Do you hear a whistling sound from the transmission after the engine is hot, i.e., after driving on the freeway for a while, and does your torque converter clucth keep locking-up and unlocking when you're driving down the road at a steady speed? If those are happening, then you've got the TCC apply piston leak. Only thing that'll fix that is a new valve body, and/or a rebuild.

its the tranny slipping. search drivetrain for "transmission slipping" or "tranny slipping"

                            you'll get tons of info
