• Manual Guys inside please....

Well this is my first manual car. So i'm not sure if these things are normal, so what do you think?

    1) Sometimes when i'm slowing down i pull the gear out, then right before i stop the light turns green so i put the gear back in and i hear a "thump" come from the back end. Is that the gears re-aligning? Also happens sometimes when i'm at a stop, then push the clutch in, put it in first, i hear the same thump, sometimes it does it sometimes it doesnt? Normal?

    2) Getting it in reverse is a B*tch. Sometimes it falls into place sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes it feels like its in, but as soon as i start giving it gas and letting out the clutch, i hear it grinding! Is that normal?

    3) Do you have to put the car in a gear first THEN switch it into Reverse? I cannot just go STRAIGHT to reverse w/out putting it into some sort of gear. (I heard that reverse doesnt have a syncro?)

Any ideas guys? Maybe its just me, but i dont think its supposed to make so much noise.

1.) The only time I've heard a thump coming from the back end was when I had a loose transmission mount. I don't have what you have when shifting like that.

    2. and 3.) Reverse on our transmissions sucks. I always go into fifth then reverse while holding the clutch in. I just had the transmission repaired last week, and its still a problem, so its a design flaw, not a problem with my tranny. I guess thats what you get when you have a sucky transmission. Lol.

Now is there a way i can check the tranny mount myself? Or should i just take it to the dealer (still under warrenty)

Dont remind me of the sucky trans!

I drove a porsche boxter a few months ago, the gears just FELL into place as if i wasnt even trying! the SMOOTHEST shifting i have ever felt, i got in my car and thought something was going to fall apart

I think you are referring to the driveline clunk as a "thump". Even the auto magazines made reference to that. I've had that since day one, so it's normal. Though, it's a lot more pronounce nowadays.....

As with the reverse, it's just missing a synchro for reverse. Just push it into fifth and then reverse. It was the same with my previous car, BerettaGT.

If all you have to do to get it in reverse is 5th then rev consider yourself lucky. I have to go 2nd, 5th, then reverse most of the time.

But don't worry, it becomes a habit and you'll start doing it w/o even thinking about it.

Yep, its just our Reverse doesn't have Synchros. You have to hit another gear first, to stop things from turning.

I wouldn't worry about the tranny mount if it was broke you'd know it, the shifter would be all over the place, espicially when you take off in first from a standstill..

as far as that cluck I have always figured it was just our sucky torque arm mounts and all the soft bushings in the back..

Oh yeah, the clunk. Pretty much, the only thing you can do to keep that from happening is to let your cluch in really slow Otherwise, clunk
