Well, I've narrowed it down to two possibilities.

Since I want to do this as economically as possible, and I have the other rear laying around, and I don't think a jump from 3.08 to 3.23 is a worthwhile enough improvement...

I'm either going to take my 95's 3.23 rear, have it swapped to a 3.42 gear, and switch the axles over from my 99's 3.08. The rear was sandblasted and coated, so it's in good condition in that sense. The only problems are that the axles have gouges from 78k of wear and tear, (probably old/worn bearings) and the studs are new LS1 type. (from the drum to disc swap) So, that's why I'd swap the 99's axles over. Which as long as the 99's axles fit in the 95, is really no problem I guess. Also, the 150$ cost of having it re-geared, having to buy some LCA's to level the potential traction problems off a bit, and installing new seals and bearings.

Or, buy shanangins rear end, depending on it's condition. I really don't want a rear that's high on miles. Can we PM here? I can't find the option.

Yeah, heh I think he was just stating that HE purchased one locally for a reasonable cost, and was suggesting that you look for something similar.

I also did this swap, got a rear from a '96 SS that had the disk brakes, Auburn LSD and 3.42 gears for $250. You just have to look around, post in some wanted ads on V8 Fbody sites, that's how I found mine. And make sure to get a rear from a manual trans car, they all have the 3.42

Well crud. After a re-read, you guys are right.

I was only considering shan's because he was a reputable member, fairly local, and would hopefully be honest enough, to tell me it's true condition. I'm a tad anal, you know.

I don't really want a rear from a yard, when I have a good, partially rebuilt one here, New gears would put it very close to new condition.

The only caveat, would be no LSD. I'm not going with 3.73's, nor am I going to drag, so traction is less of an issue. In turn, so is the LSD.

From what I've read in this thread (thanks tons guys, love this site so far) I will probably have intermittant traction problems from one side.

Would LCA's fix this? Since I'm going to be yanking the rear anyway, it would be easy to add them. Or, is there anything else besides buying an adjustable TA, or PHR to help with this issue?

edit: I will still look around local for someone selling one, I just highly doubt I'll find someone worth buying from.

If you are paying to have 3.42 gears put in they have to remove the open carrier anyway, why not have a LSD to put in its place?

The only fix for an open rear is a lighter foot.

better in dry weather I cried when I got my '00 v6, though it was quick, sucked not having LSD(my 94 had it)

one of the best mods ever. Its not only for drag launching... thats the least of why I wanted it, It helps in cornering and just feels so much more smoother and more confident coming out of a corner under load.

and sorry not local and not selling a rear, yet... Check the v8 boards the one I got was out of an 02 with 51k, works great.

Normally I woudl agree, on used parts, but I got a used 10 bolt for $120. The lsd in it is worth that much or more, and the gears are an added plus.

If all goes to hell and its junk, you will still have your stock rear.

If you do a rear gear swap on your car you are looking at like $100 for gears, and $200 for install. Maybe more.

The only thing I'm NOT going to be doing is the actual gear/carrier swap. I just don't want to mess with setting the endplay, and all that other adjustment noise. Besides, I have a friend (pro) that will do it for 150 dollars.

I will/can do everything else. When my uncle who owns a yard in Bristol, comes for T-giving, I'll try and get a good LSD from him.

Safer than anyone else, as far as I'm concerned.

i'm looking to do a carrier and gear change in a few days.
                            it looked hard at first
but most of the time consumption is just making sure everything is 100% a-okay perfect.
i dont think it will be too hard

$150 is an Excellent price!! plus hes your friend so you can trust him. I've heard some mechanics wont use the toools to put the gears in right, they just do it by sight and feel. thats BS, i'd be so pissed if I found that out.
