One Last Rear End Question

I've asked so many and I really appreciate the responses. Just one last one.

And this is coming from a V6 A4 3.08 open rear and going to a 3.73 Zexel-Torsen.

Do I REALLY need a new cover and install kit? Or can I use the stockers? The gears I got came with 6 huge washer-looking things, marking paint, 10 bolts, and a round metal piece that kind of resembles a very short cone (angled cut, thicker on one side than the other).

You can use the stockers.. You will have to unpress the pinion bearing and repress it on the new pinion.. the big washer looking things are more then likley your shims for the diff.. 10 bolts are either new cover bolts or the ring gear bolts.. As far as the round metal piece I am guessing that is the rod that holds the axles in place that goes in the middle of your diff..

Yeah, it looks like it holds something onto something else.

So then everything's cool except the unpress/repress of the pinion bearing. Sweet.

Then I don't need a different cover either, right?

If there is nothing wrong with you stock one and you dont care about the added strenth of a T/A cover and what not then no you dont need a new cover.. If you plan on making over 300 rwtq then I would get a T/A cover.. Dont forget 75W90 gear oil and limited slip additive.. and you need to reuse the old crush sleeve which is on the pinion also.. Make sure the new diff has bearings on it if it dont then you need to unpress the old bearings and put them on your new diff..

New diff has bearings. It's a new unit. Guy bought it from SLP but sold the car before using it so put it on eBay and I grabbed it up for cheap [img]smile.gif[/img]

You think I could pick up a Trans Am cover from Murrays or Advanced Auto? What's my best bet for getting one of these quick?

Oh, I'm having someone else install my stuff. They're charging me for the oil/additive/etc.

I was quoted $185 at one place. However, I'm getting a quote from one more place that I think will be cheaper because I know the mechanic's coworker/long-time-good-friend lol.

Well so far...

I got the Zexel-Torsen off eBay for about $150 shipped. I don't remember the cost of the ring/pinion, but I think it was around $70-80 shipped. The ring gear was like $25 shipped. And the rest SHOULD be labor, unless I get a new cap for it. Oh, plus a gasket.

So after buying all that it should be like $300 + labor. Which isn't bad at all! SLP sells their Zexel-Torsens for like $500. Plus everything else. eBay and patience are the way to go.

That's a different differential. The one you got was selling for $100 at SLP. ;)

It's been close to 2 years since they ran out, but yes. In the good 'ole days you could get a new takeoff LSD for $100 from SLP.

Ahh okay. Well it's still a deal to me because I couldn't possibly get it at that price. Even from a salvage yard around here because they trash all the damn F-Bodies they get. They're so dumb.

Plus, two years ago I was 15 and a LSD was so out of my vocabulary. lol
