I put a take-off Zexel in my 3.23 rear and ran that for several years until recently swapping out the whole rear for a 3.42/Auburn one. I think you're right, the Auburn feels smoother in turns but sometimes it feels like it's slipping too much and only one wheel is spinning. The Zexel I remember felt a little more harsh, notchy like, but I thought it seemed to hook up better.
