Picking my car up today with a new LSD and some 3.42 gears. The guy at the shop said I should drive 200 to 300 hundred miles for the break-in. Another buddy of mine here at work does not agree. He used to race Pro Stock all the time, he had an '89 Mustang that trapped an 8.65 at 165mph, probably had 60-70k in the car. Anyway, he says there is really no break in time for new gears. The guy from the tranny shop has 3rd gen, LS1,0.40 over, tuned and ported, TH350 trans...etc... He has timeslips with a 7.1sec 104 1/8.
So, in the end both of these seem to know quite a bit about fbodys and racing. The guy with the '89 stang was on the cover of Hot Rod Mag when he broke into the 8's a few years back.
Just looking for opinions here. It seems that a lot of you on this board are running 3.42's in you car. The timeslip page is just full of 'um, even top dog Magnus has 3.42 in his 12sec V6. Is there really a need for the new ring and pinion gears to break in and get mated or can I just roll out of the shop and power brake to 2500 and let her rip...???
