Picking my car up today with a new LSD and some 3.42 gears. The guy at the shop said I should drive 200 to 300 hundred miles for the break-in. Another buddy of mine here at work does not agree. He used to race Pro Stock all the time, he had an '89 Mustang that trapped an 8.65 at 165mph, probably had 60-70k in the car. Anyway, he says there is really no break in time for new gears. The guy from the tranny shop has 3rd gen, LS1,0.40 over, tuned and ported, TH350 trans...etc... He has timeslips with a 7.1sec 104 1/8.

So, in the end both of these seem to know quite a bit about fbodys and racing. The guy with the '89 stang was on the cover of Hot Rod Mag when he broke into the 8's a few years back.

Just looking for opinions here. It seems that a lot of you on this board are running 3.42's in you car. The timeslip page is just full of 'um, even top dog Magnus has 3.42 in his 12sec V6. Is there really a need for the new ring and pinion gears to break in and get mated or can I just roll out of the shop and power brake to 2500 and let her rip...???

    just adding \'um \'till I trap 12.393...

If its new gears AND new diffy, break it in 500 miles easily before you go nuts - it wont take long to do and will help prolong the life.

not to be rude, no one cares what timeslips these guys have. ive known people to have 9 sec cars that dont know ****, they have money and other people do the work to the cars. bottom line on soemthing like this is, just go easy for a while, thats what i did. you got the rest of your cars life to be tough on em. but i didnt have a new diff, just new gears, so i just did a hand full of heat cycles on em. I did like 175-200 miles.

Agreed, even the car mags say with new gears you need to take it easy for the first 500 miles or so.
