  • Uh Oh...!!! I hear whining from the rearend..!!

Got the LSD/3.42 combo today, but around 30mph they start to whine and it last until around 65mph then goes away..!!

The tranny shop is going to try to replace some of the bearing's and maybe even a new set of ring and pinion on Sat.

Question: Will it hurt to drive with the whine in the rearend unitl Saturday..?? I drive around 45 miles round trip each day.

What could be the problem...?? The gears or the bearing. The shop said they would replace all the bearing's in the rearend on Sat. as well as the gears.

Just curious if you guys know what might be the problem.

BTW, first gear does rock, unitl it shifts around 4500RPM's.... hello PCM reprogramming...

Could I just keep driving with the whine...??

    just adding \'um \'till I trap 12.393...

Is there a chance that this will go away after some miles on the gears, or is this the way it will be forever...???

for the most part....no the sound wont go away. I had serious whine in mine because i didnt shim them right, but it could be the gears themselves or bearing i suppose. If they know what they are doing and they marked everything properly then it cant be too many other things. Have em check it out and do it right. Where did you take it by the way?

It could be the gears. Some gears whine even when set up perfectly. They may not have gotten the backlash set up correctly which would cause it to whine.(caused by the pinion and carrier bearings not being shimmed correctly) I doubt it's the bearings but it is possible. If it's a bearing I would say that it would most likely be the pinion bearing if they reused the old bearings. I say the pinion bearing because they could have damaged it when taking it off the old one. The carrier bearings would be hard pressed to give you problems now if they weren't before.(unless the fubard those somehow)

Is it safe to drive with? Dunno. I don't know exactly what it sounds like. If it isn't to bad I would continue driving. Did the shop tell you not to drive it until they got it fixed?

The guy at the shop really wants to fix the problem. I just needed my car for work. He said it should be fine to drive. He said he checked the backlash twice after the test drive and he heard the whine. He has already replaced the Pinion bearing and that did not help.

Hou-Tex-Six, I took it to Xtreme Racing on the corner of Hwy 6 and Clay Rd. They only work on fbodys and does a lot of Camaro work. They do everything from gears to engine swaps. Right now he has a super light Nissan 240SX that has and LT1 smashed between the fenders.

Anyway, I drove the car to work this morning still whining but only between 30-65mph, at low speeds it does not whine at all.

              thanks for all the help...!!!!
