  • Gears or HP Tuner?

My mom just got a check in the mail for 2000 from my father and I am alloud to spend 600 of it for christmas. I am going to either:
    A. buy 3.73 gears for my car or
    B. buy a HP Tuner for my car

which would be a better investment? Which would increase my 1/4 mile speed the most?

I do not know much about HP Tuners but I am willing to do the required research to find out how to use one.

My brother said he would install gears on my car for $150 so installation wouldn't be a problem.

    Help me out :D :D :D

I'd say gears, but listen to the other guys over me.

If you plan on adding more mods than just the bolt-ons, go ahead and get the tuners. Not saying it won't benefit you with just bolt-ons, but it really doesn't become invaluable until you are beyond the bolt-ons.

I'd go with the gears and LSD, the LSD especially is a must-mod for the car. If you put them in make sure to set some of that change aside for more frequent rubber replacement. ;)

we just got a brand new computer too.. 3.5 ghz 1 mb memory, high speed cd writer 250GB HD.. its awesome.. one of the coolest days i've had in awhile.

Wonder how much horsepower I could expect from a tuner, and how much I would get from gears

Also where can I get a set of LSD 3.73 gears?

I could see getting the mail order tune from TSP, supposedly it gets about 30 HP and makes the car a lot more driveable. I think it's $275. Plus then you'll get the PCM adjusted for your new gears. I'm thinking about doing that myself (the TSP tune).

GM Motive or Richmond. People will say either make noise, I say it's all in how they're installed. The LSD I would definitely get from eBay, look for a Zexel torsen take-off.

And Rob brings up a good point. You don't need to spend the money for HP Tuners just to retune your PCM. You can probably see the same gains on a bolt-on car with TSP's tuning, and at half the price.

Hypertech claims to have gained 13 HP and 19 ftlbs of torque on a 3.8 firebird...

your right.. i would have to go with the HP... do they offer a HP for a 98 firebird

I decided on a tuner.. even though gears would probablly produce more horsepower, I don't want to buy something I couldn't mess around with and tuning seems like it would be a cool touch to my car... seemings how I have a laptop and would be able to put a nice setup in my car :D

I will be buying the HP Tuner with the enhanced IO & 3 pigtails.. I am choosing the 98 & 99 firebird for the 2 car selections

I'm telling you, LSD is probably the single best mod for our cars. You don't know what your missing until you drive one with it. Better traction and tons more fun.

With a tuner you will be able to run a higher octane too!
