• poppin out of gear

Ok, i just recently installed a Hurst billet shifter in my car, along with a lou's short stick. I installed the shifter to the hurst specs. I adjusted the travel limiters as well. hurst says to screw them in til htey contact the shifter, then back them out a half turn and tighten the jam nut. Initially, i did this but the shifter would pop outta gear in 4th gear. so i took it all apart and backed the adjusters out an additional half turn (1 turn total).
The shifter is still poppin out of gear in 4th if im just cruisin and hit a bump. Is this normal? does anyone else have this problem? i do have a different shift knob on however - its a solid chunck of polished aluminum that i turned down in machine shop. im sure the added weight isnt helping any, but i never had a problem with the factory shifter. any suggestions as to why its knockin out of gear or is the hurst just like that... thanks

the hurst instructions may not be spot on... try allowing another half turn out. don't go any farther than that though.

your problem could also be helped along by a synchro going bad, but i rarely hear of 4th gear synchro problems.

Could it be a worn transmission mount? If it is only popping out now if you hit a bump.

well ill take a look at that tranny mount but i think its the shifter. this absolutely never happened before with the factory shifter. the problem used to happen with 2nd too, but after i adjusted the stops the first time, that stopped. the adjusters seem to be centered directly in line with where the shifter is in 2nd and 4th, so that could be why the problem only occurs with them. I just do not want to loosen the adjusters too far and render them ineffective.

Our T5 has internal stops - you don't even need the external ones like the hurst and B&M ripper have. Back them out as far as you'd like..

yeah... i think im gonna back them off a bit. but tell me, if this shifter is made for a T5, then why have the stops if htey arent needed??

I don't think all T5's have the stops, or else it's compatible with another tranny too. Or just another item for the marketing feature list

the mustang T5s do require the external stops... i've never seen a camaro shifter with external stops. my B&M didn't have them.
