drivetrain loss

When I first got here, everyone was saying 15-20% loss from the trans, depending on if its 14 or m5. All that crap. Well, I got to thinking. Lets say that the z28 and our cars have the same exact drivtrain. Only difference is the HP. so, the z28 would loose more "to the drivetrain" because its got a higher base hp rating. BUT, we now that its using the same stuff, so it'd really loose the same amount as the v6. So my question would be, doesnt it matter on the drivetrain and not a percentage? so lets say the 4L60E's loost 25hp and the 4L60's loose 20. Instead of a percentage.

Just becase I do some mods, Keep my same drivetrain setup, but have the engine produce more HP doesnt mean I lost more to the trans... does it?

yes it does...

% is the best way to say the loss, it is no set amount.


ther are also other things to consider over a z28, like the driveshaft. Igained about 2 mph with just a lt1 dirveshaft, over a stock 2-peice v6 driveshaft.

Its definately more like a % because of principles in mechanical systems.

ok.. so if I add stuff to make more HP, how do I loose more to the drivetrain?

hypothetical
Stock v6- 200hp at the fly
with a 20hp mechanical loss

modded v6- 300hp
30hp loss

same exact drivetrain... WHY does the modded loose more to the same system?

It has to do with mechanical efficiency.

All mechanical & thermal systems have losses, if you did'nt have losses, there would be some kick-*** (perfect) machines out there. The best we can do is work on increasing the efficiency.

I still dont understand how adding more HP will have more loss. if my engine makes 200hp and I mod it to make 250, there should be the same amount of drivetrain loss. But going my the percentages, they wont be the same.

Whats 50 percent of 50?? 25 right.. If I raise the number to 100 and take out the same amount which is 50 percent then what do I have?? 50...

the more hp you make the more you lose because the equation gets bigger..

I understand what you are trying to say, but it's about efficiency. If you add more power to your car, it has to put more force through the same drivetrain to produce more horsepower to the wheels. That's why.

ok.. I see now. Thanks for clearing that up everyone. I guess I was just thinking into it too much.
