• something wrong!!!

I finally dug the bird outta snow on sunday and took her for a drive. I was on the parkway cruising around 65mph, making sure not to beat on it since its been 2 weeks since driven. While accelerating up a hill, I feel my car to kind slip real quick ( gear ) and then catch again.

I was like  so i was heading toward the exit, i decide to give it a lil gas to see if i was grabbing ok. It did but as I was slowing down, I heard my gears whining like the were brand new . when I came to a full stop and then started moving again, i heard a very loud grinding and banging coming from the rear end. I quickly pull over and see a trail of gear oil for about 5 ft. I could not see where it was leaking from cause it wasn't leaking while still?

What could have possibly happened? my guess right off the bat was either the gears or the drive shaft. still waiting to hear the damage :(

On top of that, The tow man raped my a$$ when he charged me $130 for a 3 mile tow. He told me the rates went up.....it is under investigation right now

Hope this belongs here..whenever i have a problem with the bird i put it in this section. Thanks.

    Chris

Did you look under the car after it broke? If you did and couldn't see a leak around the diff cover or the axle tubes then it may have leaked from where the pinion seal is. It's possible the seal ripped and allowed it to leak only when driving. I hope you don't have a cracked case or tubes. My guess is that your gears are fubard. They may have gone to long without oil and possibly warped.

Let us know what you find out.

After talking to the mechanic(A$$hole) he told me that there was a lot of play in the ring & pinion.

he said that i need new everything R&P, seals, gaskets, bearings....pretty much the whole installation kit.

He said he can replace everything i had w/ a new posi carrier and the works for $1250.00

I told him over the phone that " man you are raping me!!"

He said the gears are 275, instal. kit is 175, posi carrier is 275? not sure about that...i bet i can find 1 cheaper and labor $420.

I spoke to my friend who is a mechanic and he said my gears have exploded when i described the sound it made...

I am putting a new order in for gears/kit from summit right now...Do you guys recommend lsd or posi ??

Buy a rearend off a used lt1, cost me $408 shipped, from www.speedautomotive.com.

I upgraded to 4-wheel disc, 3.42s, LSD, and even got a lt1 driveshaft all for that price.

I did the install myself, it is not really that hard, technically, but anove average on the physical part, moving the rear axles around.

I had similar problems as you I looked into it, it was actually cheapre for me to do a lt1 rear axle swap and upgrade my gears, get LSD, and convert to 4 wheel disc brakes then it was to fix my stock diffy, myself.

If you have any questions you can IM me, my lt1 rear end has been in for 1.5 years, with the 4 wheel disc brake conversion, and they all work great at the strip and autocrossing/roadracing.

What a tool. You can get the R&P for $150, install kit for $100 LSD for $99 and install yourself if you know what you are doing or $200-300.

Or like MustangEater8251 said. Buy a complete rearend from a Z28 at a salvage yard.

He didn't even take the cover off to look at it? What a TOOL.

Thats what I said...." your telling me I need this, this , and this without even taking a look??" Then he started getting loud with me.

But there is no way im letting this guy touch my car. My buddy is a mechanic for ford and he knows a guy that builds race cars...he said he will help me out. I will also see what he recommends in terms of what to get and where.

I hear what your saying mustangeater about a t/a rear but I really dont want to put anything used in my car. Plus I only have like a day to decide..my car is still at the other shop and I need to get it towed outta there and bring it to my buddies friend.

I also wanted to get LSD or posi but never did....what is actually better? The slp sounds nice for $99. What about those covers for the gears....do they do anything for your car performance wise or are they just to keep everything tighter in the rear?

WOW!! I just got off the phone with the new/cool mechanic....he said he will have my car towed to his shop 10 or so miles for like 40 dollars...then he also mentioned that he has a brand spankin new rear end off of a 2001 T/A with 3.73's ;) . I told him to throw it in if he can. He is charging me 600 for the rear and probably nothing for labor!!!!
