  • Aluminum driveshaft adjusting

I just put on an aluminum driveshaft from a 89 TransAm. The install went fine, I was just curious if there is anything I need to, to adjust it. I can tell there is some noise and some vibration, so it's not balanced the way it's on now, I guess. Is there anything I should do, like rotate it 90 and reinstall, and keep doing that until it's fine, or do I need to take it to a shop to get it balanced? Also, since it's kinda old, should I look into new bearings at the u joints or anything I'm not thinking of. The driveshaft seemed to be in great condition. Thanks.

If it's not balanced then you need to take it to a shop to get it balanced. There is no adjusting when installing.

Well, if you want a quick ghetto fix, you can put a hose clamp around the shaft and tighten it down as tight as you can. Then drive it around and see how much it vibrates, go back under, and rotate the hose clamp, and drive again. Do this untill you get as little vibration as possible. This will get sloppy after a while though, a little tach weld, or a few drops of JB weld to hold it in place will work.

Otherwise, I would check to make sure that the U-joints are centered. It might help a little to pull the shaft out and rotate it untill it feels best too.

if you are unsure, take it to a driveshaft shop and let them check it for balance.. if it's good then I'd look into new U joints.. but one of the reasons gm put a 2 piece in is because it is supposed to be quieter and have less vibration..
