• Problems with notchy shifter

    Hello all,

I have a Pro 5.0 shifter on my car, and I have noticed that lately it has become really difficult to shift while driving, especially the 1st to 2nd shift. I must say that my clutch is also starting to show its age although it is not at the point of slipping yet.

I am not very familiar with trannys but my dad told me in the older cars there was a way to regulate the transmission when the clutch was starting to go but he has no clue about these cars. Or could this just be a problem that the clutch is going?

    Any insight would be appreciated

Same thing happened when my clutch was about to die. Also had a real hard time putting it in 1st from a stop.

My '96 M5 clutch is on its way out very soon too. I am experiencing the same exact problem as you, the dreaded notchy 1-2 gear throw.

At red lights, stop signs or heavy traffic, the procedure I have been doing the second before I roll is to depress the clutch pedal in and shift into 4th for a quick sec.

At the point from 4th, you immediately throw the stick back into 1st gear and let off on the clutch to begin rolling from a dead stop while applying the gas simultaneously. This action makes shifting into 1st quite effortless to take off from a dead stop in my opinion.

Afterwards, I rev high in 1st then depress the clutch pedal & throw it into 3rd gear for suburban driving or the 1-3-5 gear shift for the highway cruise. I guess from my actions I am saving any life out of my clutch until the very last time I can shift before blowing it out completely.

By the way, if you do blow the clutch, you will be looking into what aftermarket clutches that are out there available for our M5 so please post to benefit the rest of us. I've recently done enough Searches on this particular topic that the hydraulic slave assembly replacement would have to be considered as a good and thorough clutch repair idea in the entire process.

It's expensive but this is why we love rowing the gears.

        I said this before and I'll post it again;

It's going to sound strange, but it worked!

I had the same problem with my gears too on my 96 m5. It didn't want to shift into 1st from a stop, and changing gears was a pain from 2nd on through 4th. I was about to change the clutch, and figured I'd change the fluid first. After changing the fluid, I took it to the store for parts I was going to need for the clutch-job and the friggin problem was gone...Seriously! It shifted like it was new again. That was back in the summer of '02, and I still have the new clutch awaiting installation.

Performed a Search and I found an old but very useful thread pertaining to this subject. Looks like our problem isn't so bad but a routine maintenance check may solved this notchy shifting problem.

Well.... my car is frigging nuts! It's like being in an infernal marriage and she hates my guts. Apparently the shifter is not getting stuck anymore. No idea why, could be because I am giving it more gas while doing all shifts since the clutch is going out...who knows. But I will do the fluid change anyway, thanks for the heads up on that!

Clutch coming out soon too, probably during christmas break. Thanks guys.

              Well here is a thought...

mine is like that, kind hard to get into 1st... I have to rev match a little to get it in, and shifting is kind of notchy...

              BUT....

I have new master, new slave, new flywheel, new clutch, new TOB, new pilot bearing, and the drill mod.

I only bled it once but been lazy, will bleed it some more. Should be easier for me know since I have a spare slave I can use to bleed the Master with.

there is a restriction in the hydraulic lines that retricts flow. It is believed to be there so it "eases" the clutch a bit. Saving the tranny.

                  same thing on our car...
