I'm going to get a LSD for my car I wanted to know whether I should get 3.42 or 3.23 gears. I'll be doing a lot of highway driving next year (college is 5-6 hours away) so i need one that won't cause my engine to run too high at 75-80 MPH. What RPMs do you usually run at with 3.42s on the highway?

Im guessing you have an automatic car with 3.08's. You are not going to see much of a gain going to 3.23's. 3.42's dont run the engine that hard at 80mph. I switched from 3.08's to 3.42s. 3.42s without a doubt..i just did mine and recalibrated for them and i dont notice anything different except acceleration! 3.42. If you do any highway driving at all. SOme guys will says 3.73's but they are not worth for another .1 in the 1/4. Ok, so you do a lot of highway driving. Do you drag race, autocross, drive agressively on the street, or do land speed type racing? What mods do you have, or are you planning to have in the near future?
These are all important things to know before recommending a gear selection.

Most common upgrade is to go for the 3.42s. The 3.23 wouldn't make any noticeable difference. The 3.42 in combo with LSD makes a great difference in the car, and really wakes it up; After I did the swap, I definitely felt a lot more kick in the car. Most of my highway driving is 75-85mph and I dont think I ever pass 2500rpm while cruising. I wanna say I'm generally around 2300rpm.
If you're looking for nice high cruising, and some decent street performance, go 3.42 all the way. Make sure you get everything (ring and pinion, LSD, rebuild kit for rear, reluctator ring for ABS, recalibration). My Camaro came from the factory with a 3.42 rear axle ratio; however i do not have a limited slip differential, but i am looking into converting. I do a lot of my driving around 55-65mph, and even at 65mph i am only revving just under 2000. Not too bad for 3.42s i guess.2000 Monterey Maroon Chevrolet Camaro<br />3.8L V-6/4spd Auto
