• LOL... so how long can a rear make noise before it dies?

so my not so old rear is making a little noise.

been kind of rough on it, its not horrid but louder then normal. I have gone 5 months on a rear that has made noise before.

Also an auburn diff should have no problems as long as it still works right? Most likely a gear problem?

All signs I can tell the diff works 100% no issures

think that brings the total up to...

1 torque arm
1 torque arm mount
1 driveshaft
5 tranny mounts
2 10 bolts
3 working on my 4th tranny
5 clutches
2 flywheels
2 slaves
1 master

or something like that, its getting hard to keep track of

Mine has made noise for the last 15 months and sounds very bad. I'm finially going to get it rebuilt in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it won't break between now and then.

I drove on my drum rear making noise for almost a year. It turned out to be a carrier bearing. The cover magnet looked like it was growing a winter coat.

My '99 FB also has a very noticeable rear end whine that changes depending on speed and/or power applied.

I bought the car a year and a half ago and the first thing I did when I brought the car home was to remove the dif cover and inspect the assembly. All was normal. The cover magnet only had that charcoal pastey residue that you find with normal wear, no metal chunks or filings.

Put it all back together and serviced it with synthetic diff fluid.

19 Months and 20,000 miles later, nothing has changed. I suspect the pinion bearing was not positioned properly during build up at the factory and over time has repositioned and changed the gearlash.

Interestingly, at about 70 mph it is almost quiet. When passengers ask what that noise is I tell them it's because the rear end has a special NASCAR setup (for sustained high speed)!

Also, my brother-in-law's Astro van's rear end made exactly the same noise and it never failed or got any worse over the 150,000 miles that he had put on it.

For me, I will not do anything about it until I notice that the noise changes or gets worse.

i know, my rear has been makin noise since the day i bought it at 60,000 and now its at 95,000. weird as hell tho, its not the diff i dont think. it makes this kinda ratcheting clunk-clunk-clunk when i dont apply power, and fer some reason only on rainy days. who knows, dont really care that much cuz it hasnt gotten worse.
