My differental is making a sound

A couple of months ago my car stared to make some grinding sounds in the rear side. Two days ago I went to my mechannic and he said that the differental bearings are gone. What will be the estimate on buying a new one and what kind of diffental is good for the car 2000 Firebird V6.

I bought it used and I'm guessing that the people that had it fisrt they like to peel out alot. I just like to use the car going out thats it. estimate price is around $1,000.

umm.. im pretty sure you can slap his face for that price.. dont all you need is a differental and bearings?

if only your bearings are out, you'll just need to replace them and the races.

for a quote of 1000 though, it sounds to me like they are going more in depth, such as replacing pinion bearings or even the entire ring and pinion. find out exactly what they're going to do and we can give you more information.

If you want a factory open differntial I'll sell you the one I took out of my 2000 Camaro for $30+shipping. It had 44,000 miles on it when I took it out, no noise or anything, I just installed one of the last SLP takeoff LSDs...

if they want that much go buy a ta take off rear end. Its easier to change out the whole rear end than to work on yours. you and a friend could easily do it in a weekend.

You have 2 bearings and 2 races. The old ones need pulled off your carrier and the new bearings pressed on.

For the price you were quoted it sounds as if they are doing a complete rear rebuild. The rebuild kits (which include all the required bearings, races and seals) are around $100. $900 sounds like a lot of labor, but it is a pretty intensive job.

If they are completely rebuilding the rear, I don't think its too outragous, I have heard others charge similar.

If you just need the diff, I'd replace it, and slap new bearings in. Not too hard to do yourself but not a cinch.

If you need a whole rear end rebuild, I'd do what t-punk and slap a whole new rear, setting proper backlash and such on the gears is difficult.

P.S. I suggest skimming all hte major f-body boards, in a section local to you, and see if anyone local is parting out a car, and has a rear end.

mines doing the same noise and for them to replace the whole rear axle, it costs about 800

I got it all fix thank everone for the tips I did all my self and its running great I just did it myself cahnge the bearings
