No, if you hold the auto in 3rd, it will not shift into 4th (overdrive).

Dont shift in an auto!!! At least thats what they mechanic who put my rebuilt engine in said haha. Apparently by shifting I 'over-torqued" my motor and spun a rod bearing. Oops! Plus I think it hurts your tranny.

I was told locally by my transmission builder(Craig Staples) that manually shifting a 4L60-E is the way to go. He says that when a gear is manually selected, there are more components in the trans holding in that gear. I did a lil reasearch and found this to be true.

I ususally shift from 1-2 just b4 redline, and then hold 2nd(which works) all the way out 500RPM past redline, then shift to 3rd. its not for the faint of heart BC this does put added stress on a stock engine...

put it in 1st if your racing from a roll, this is how i do it,
From a roll i keep it in 1st to start off so that my car wont shift into 2nd before it is flagged go from 1st gear to drive and leaveit there as 98 camaro 3.8 said. racing from a stop-leave it in drive, if your car is anything like my 99 camaro it will redline through EVERY gear, but my car is also dynoed at 250hp, as far as i know i'm all stock---but i AM the 2nd owner of my car, all i've done is put tha exaust,--witch does help with a quicker shift by tha way, hope i helped!!

The only useful application I've found with shifting my automatic is from a roll you can shift down into 3rd or even 2nd (at lower speeds) and hold that gear until you're ready to race. This way you don't have that extra delay from your auto downshifting by itself cuz it's already in the right gear. Other than that I'd leave it in Drive or the occasional Neutral to throw some revs at people

Not to steal the subject but... 250 HP, stock motor?... Thats only 25 away from a LT1 Z28... How on earth can a stock 3.8 turn out 250 ponies?
