  • n00b question

a higher gear (4.10's as opposed to say 3.73's) means that the wheel turns more times for each rotation of the engine.

for example, if there were two identical cars, one with 4:1 gears and one with 3:1 gears, and they are both going in the same gear with the same RPM;s, the one with 4:1's will be going faster.

am i correct or opposite in this statement?

no, a higher gear means that the wheel turns less for each rotation of the engine.

an engine pushing 3.23s will have to turn fewer RPMs to travel the same distance as a car with 3.73s. the car with the lower gear will be traveling at a higher velocity if both cars are in the same gear and their engines are rotating at the same speed.

wouldnt you want lower gears to make your car go faster then?

You've ridden a bike before, right?

If everytime you pedaled one rotation and your bike tire turned twice, it would be an AWFUL lot of works for your legs, wouldn't it? It would be hard to accelerate. You'd be able to reach a high speed once you got going, though.

But if your bike tire only turned 1/4 rotation when you pedaled one rotation, it'd be a whole lot easier on your legs. However, you'd have to be pedaling very very fast to reach the same top speed as if your bike tire turned two rotations for every rotation of the pedals.

I'm sure you can see the relation to your car.

What he is saying is that with 4.10's, you'll be able to accelerate MUCH faster from a stop, but top speed will drop, whereas if you had 3.08's you wont have as much power to accelerate, but once you do get going, you will have a higher top speed.

4.10's will accelerate to a specific RPM faster, however all other things being equal, the car with the numerically lower gear (like a 3.42) will be faster at a given RPM.

Let's put it this way, on a bicycle 5 speed, when your in first gear is like having 4.10s and in fifth gear is like having 3.08s. Understand?

Wow nice comparison. Makes it real easy to understand. I think I'm using that next time I explain gears.
