• Manual shifting and hammering an A4

Hey I like to manual upshift and downshift my car. Is this hurting anything? Also, I mash the gas down a lot and the thing shifts great (yeah I have 3:08's who cares), my question is should I stop doing this and is there anyway to beef up the tranny a little? I really don't want different gears. Thanks tranny's.

why are you manually shifting your tranny? the occasional downshift is understandable but youre really not gaining anyhting by shifting like that. nothing really out there to "beef up" your tranny unless you wanna buy a rebuild kit that can make it into a race tranny, but you dont need that. why dont you want new gears? its a lot more practical then building a monster tranny for stock engine

monster tranny it is!!! thanks man

seriously, I don't shift like that ALL the time, just like one day a week, but that one dayyy oh man watch out, I'm a manual shifting machine! I don't want to change my gears because I do a lot of highway driving and the gears are sweet for cruising at like 80-85 at low RPM's.

With myself I do some manual shifting on my A4. But only at low speeds..if I'm at 30 km/h and coming to a stop at a red light, or in a busy parking lot i drop it into 1st. It makes my flowmaster sound pretty sweet. Get lots of looks

Actually on a side note...does that ruin the tranny?? I dont think it will because im doing it at a low speed and I know our tranny's are pretty good. I do do it quite often though.

i wont hurt your tranny but u will evantually wear out your 2 series carrier if u are doing hard downshifting. it may affect your tranny but then u have a reason to get it built nice and tuff.

actually, manually downshifting an automatic transmission is not good for it at all. i'm sure someone else here besides dom could tell you why, but i know for a fact that dom explained why in a topic not too long ago, as a matter of a fact, he said that downshifting an automatic transmission manually is one of the worst things you can do to your transmission...so you might try searching, seems to be a somewhat popular topic anyway.

it depends when you downshift...
if you downshift at a high rate of speed for the gear, yeah thats horrible, but if you shift from close to a stop down to 2 or so going down a mountain thats not to bad, it just holds it in that gear... Im sure what Dom was talking about was going flying down the highway and shifting out of 4 into 3, or going about 40 and shifting into 2.... and NEVER downshift into 1, even if youre only going like 5mph theres no reason to... thats what Ive understood from discussions about this before at other places besides this board... but i could be wrong =)
