ok guys, i just won this the other day and it is coming in the mail tomorrow:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...847800420&rd=1

this item looks to have the ujoints on it already, but i am not sure if i need to press the old ujoints off of the 2 piece ds and put them on this one? can anyone plz tell me how i am supposed to install this new ds? i really just need to know if i need to press the old ujoints off or if i just take the old one off and then put the new one in. is it that simple? and how exactly do you get the ds out of the transmission? thx guys. i'm doing this project tomorrow and would like to know a little bit about it before i head into it. thx.

This is a very easy install for the most part. First you need to take off the bracket that is under the driveshaft and exhaust. After that, I think at about the center where the 2 peice joint is it is connected to the torque arm. There are 2 bolts. You need to unbolt them and the top one might take a while because it's in a weird location. After that it will fall down in the middle. The part that connects into the differential you need to unbolt that and it will come apart. Once you have it down you can pull it out of the transmission. Pretty simple right? here comes the hard part. The v6 driveshaft has that round peice in the middle. If you notice, the one on the new drive shaft is at the top where it connects to the tranny. They didn't build the v6 with that in mind. So you will need a dremel, incase you don't know what it is, it's a tiny rotary tool with various bits used for sanding, shaving, grinding, polishing etc... There is a bracket that makes a 90 degree angle right where the ds needs to connect in the transmission. A little **** hair of that is preventing it from going in all the way. So you will need a dremel to shave a little bit of that off. Filing won't work you will be there all day. If you don't have one you can buy for for like $40 or so. Make sure you have plenty of grinding discs ready and I recommend you buy one that has a cord, I bought a recharable and it took all night to recharge and I had my car apart so it was out of comission. After you get that part shaved you simply put it in the tranny, connect it back up at the differential and put that stupid little bracket back on and you have your new DS. It's a pretty easy install except the shaving of that bracket can be a pain in the *** .
Good luck.

I am not sure what you are talking about ted?

Here is a picture so we can see if we are talking about the same thing.

http://www.usinternet.com/users/sell...iveshafts2.jpg

Are you talking about grinding down the large round piece on the part that slips onto the trans output shaft? Mine didn't have a problem fitting on a '96 A4. I haven't heard anyone else talking about this. I would think that if you did this, it would through the shaft out of balance. What was that piece rubbing against?

When I did mine, all I did was unbolt the center support bearing (big middle one). Then unbolt the u-joint from the rear. I had to give it a good tug to get the back part to disconnect. Then it slides right off the trans shaft. Take your new one, slide it onto the trans shaft, and tighten the brackets that go over the rear u-joint, and you're done.

I wanted to replace the u-joints while I had it apart, might save me some work later. I replaced the rear u-joint on the 1pc shaft myself (it was the metal clip kind, not the factory plastic injected). I took it to a shop to have the front one pressed out. The guy at the shop said it was in perfect condition, he said he would be happy to take my money, but if it was his car he wouldn't replace it. So I took his word for it, and left the front one alone.

The center support bearing on my driveshaft is going out so I'm going to replace it with a single piece ds from a bone yard. I read in my Chilton something about a nylon material being injected into the u-joint to secure them to the yoke. This is destroyed when disassembling the u-joint. But if I remember right I won't be taking them apart just to install the ds will I? It's the 3.4 L with the 5 speed manual tranny.

Has anyone had any bad experiences installing a used single piece ds in a 94 v6 Firebird? Any advice or tips greatly appreciated. Plan on doing the install saturday august 10th.

Thanks

if you get the ds, hopefully and probably it will come with ujoints already in it so you won't have to mess with getting the old ujoints off. but i got the ds in with no huge problems, it was just a little bit of a pain for me cause my old ds didn't want to come out at all. the gains: haha, you're asking the wrong guy, i didn't even notice much gains when i went from 3.08s to 3.42s...so that should tell you something ;)

I just finished installing my aluminum driveshaft that I got off a TA. It was a really easy installation. I figured it would take a while but it only took me like an hour. My hands were completely black when I finished. It gets pretty messy under there. I think I noticed some difference. I'm not really sure but my car seems to accelerate quicker.

I had to get a new u joint put on because it had a different sized one from this guys 12 bolt rear end. I didn't do it myself, I took it to NAPA and they charged me 13 bucks to do it. So I would recomend just taking it in somewhere.

My only concern I have is that when I put it on I had to remove the clip type things (don't know the name for them) that were on the u-joint caps. It wouldn't fit on with them on there. I'm a little concerned about that. I guess I'll just climb under there again in a week or so and see if they're coming off. I'd hate to lose my DS while I'm going down the highway or something. If anyone knows if this is a problem, please let me know.

I'm very happy about it being an easy install though. :D Cuz I had heard some things about the stock aluminum DS (not 1LE) not fitting sometimes. Fit perfect though!

Billy - I wasn't talking about shaving off the part on the driveshaft. There is a bracket, i forget what it is to off of the top of my head. But it comes close right where you place the ds into your transmission. On mine just a little part of that bracket prevented the driveshaft from going in completely. So I had to shave just a little off. You guys didn't have to do this at all. I think W68Firebird knows what im talking about.

Does it make any difference what my rear end gears are and what single piece ds I install? I am assuming any 1 piece steel ds from a late model Camaro or Firebird will fit fine.

It makes no difference what gears you have. Depending on how much you're paying for the one piece steel DS, you should probably just up it to aluminum. You should have no problems. :D

Got the new ds installed today, I didn't specify it to the bone yard but I lucked out and got the aluminum ds anyway for $100.00. I swear I can feel a difference. But I know now that the center bearing has been dragging since I bought the car. That funny noise Iv'e been hearing is gone now. Great upgrade, well worth the money.
