how much time will be shaved from my 1/4 time as compared with my 3.42's??
I have an auto and 3.73s
60mph = 2000rpm
75mph = 2500rpm
your trap speed will not drop by adding gear unless you run out. i wish people would stop making statements like that...
i think little g is trapping 96 and he has 4.10s- he also has relatively few mods, compared to me anyway.
going from 3.23s to 3.73s and no other mods, i gained about 1 mph trap speed and 4 tenths in the first 1/8th; in the second 1/8th i gained another tenth and 1 more mph.
With my old 3.08 gears I averaged 87.05 as a trap speed with as average 1/4 time of 15.86
With my new 3.42 my trap speed averaged 86.44 with an average 1/4 time of 15.75.
I lost .61 mph and gained .11 sec in the 1/4 mile. Now this is just my experience.
Cruising at 75mph my tach is around 2500

going by Firefighters other posts, im assuming he has 3.42s. Up until before my 3.73 install, the almost unanymous choice was 3.42s for a gear choice here. its refreshing to see the members moving on to lower ratios. I cannot talk about 3.42s because i dont have them and dont know how they perform. I am saying that Firefighter obviously doesnt know what he's talking about. My 70 mph rpms are between 2200 and 2300. undriveable? i think not. They are the perfrect gear IMO. awesome acceleration while still maintaining driveability and i would recommend them to anyone. Im sick of everyone constantly ragging on 3.73 when 95% of them dont not have them or even driven a car with them.
also...a 3.23 to 3.73 swap will most likely take off more than .2

I don't know what I'm talking about? HAHA I will just laugh in your face in stead of fight with you on the internet. I also lost MPH in the 1/4 just like evan did and most people do. Also your right 3.23's to 3.73's will take off more than .2 but, maybe if you read the whole post you would see he has 3.42's therfor one step up isn't going to be a drastic change more like a moderate change.

BTW you also Have a 5 spd, totally different ball game.

alright well with all this yes/no im still undecided..heres some more info, it will be my daily driver so if im going to lost like 5 mpg then i dont need higher gears. i am mostly city miles, however i usually only travel on the 50mph streets. it also sounds like my mph will be slower? how does that happen if they make you go faster?
I picked up .35-.45 going from 3.23's to 3.73's and my MPH also came up. Firefighter is a perfect example of someone who dogs the 3.73's and 4.10s, he doesnt have them. They are NOT overkill, even in a daily driver. Gas mileage isnt hurt that bad and they will easily outrun a 3.42.
Wickedsix you and the other guy have 5 spds, he DOESN't get that thru you head instead of taking personal shots at me.

^^^ :rolleyes:
whos taking personal shots at who here? i simply said you dont know what you are talking about when it comes to 3.73s because YOU DONT HAVE THEM! just like i dont have 3.42s. but somehow, the doggin on 3.37s continues by people who have no experience with them. besides being a "whole different ball game"...please. besides having diferent tranny gear ratios, its common sense that the lower gear you have the faster you accelerate. period. the only way it slows you down is you get to your top speed limiter quicker. and w/ a theoretical top speed of 170mph+ w/o a top speed limiter i dont really see a downside. i agree with Wickedsix they are not overkill. im not trying to start a war and if you read my other posts about this, you'll see how much it irritates me about what people say about 3.73s. probably alot of people who were new to modifying bought 3.42s based on what you and most other ppl say when they would probably be MUCH happier with 3.73s

Even though we hvae 5 speeds, the auto isnt that much different from our cars. It wasnt meant to be a personal shot but i get tired of people who dont have them bashing them. I had one buddy that had a firebird with intake and exhaust with 3.08's. He ran a 15.97 best. He added some Drag radials and 3.73's and ran a 15.39 at altitude. It was daily driven and he said gas mileage wasnt hurt hardly any. They're not that bad. I'd bet if you had some in your old camaro you'd praise them too.
Well what ever, I am not going to turn this into a pissing match. I will stand by my opinion of the 4.10's being over kill and the 3.73's are not really needed in an auto. A 5 spd would be fine. It's your money, buy what you want.

fire fighter is correct, i have an auto which should be considered, but i seem to be hearing a lot more positive than negative feedback on the 3.73's. i think a 1le DS, LSD and 3.73's will be my next mods then ill step up to headers and possibly f/i. i appreciate all the input and opinions....even though i didnt start the post :hide:
so, any of our sponsors have good prices on gears?
