  • Auto Tranny (A4) Question

How high of a speed can I go in 3rd gear on my automatic? I never really took a chance on the highway in 3rd gear.

as high as you can. 4th gear is for fuel economy when you hammer on it you drop to 3rd

      That's right.

If you really want to... you can get a custom program to use that 4th gear for an extra top end gear.

Cool, so I can drive around in 3rd gear(highway and street) and won't have anything to worry about?

You'll go faster in 4th, once it's wound out of 3rd.

If you leave the gas pedale on the floor the trans will shift in to 4th at about 110mph and then it will use 4th to gain speed. At this point you don't have to much speed to gain though because of the speed limiter on the car it sucks.
To speed or not to speed that is the question.

It don't see a overdrive on my car. It just has P,R,N,D,3,2,1. Lol, I sound like a little kid. I guess the regular drive gear is considered the overdrive??

Your car will go 115mph in 3rd/D. Then you have 2 let off the gas assuming it is floored for it 2 shift into overdrive.

Cool, Thanx for the info. I'll go try it in 3rd gear for the first time tomorrow just to see whats up. Do you guys with automatics do your regular driving in 3rd gear?

It's not going to shift into overdrive if it's in 3rd/Drive...

What's the problem with driving in OD? The car is going to run the same in OD/4th as it does in D/3rd up till the point where it shifts into 4th. Shifting into overdrive will save you gas and wear and tear on the engine. Give it some gas and it'll downshift into 3rd. There really isn't much to demystify about driving an automatic.
