No, actual TCS was offered on 01 and up V6's. It operates on the same principle as ASR and TCS in their big brothers... ie the computer reduces throttle and/or applies the rear brakes to slow the rear wheels.
Don't beleive me, it's option code NW9 on the Firebird/Camaro, just like on the Formula/Z28. I am sure it's the TCS button I have. It's right in front of my shifter above my ashtray/lighter. I turned it off, but it turns itself back on after a few minutes.

yes. around town when i'm going 40 or below. excessive shifting into 4th (OD) causes excessive wear on the clutches/bands for the OD clutch pack in the trans. i shift into OD (4th or D on the birds) when cruising over 40.ASE Master, L1, X1, C1. Instructor in automotive systems. 99 3800 4L60E with a few mods and a greatful dead sticker on the back window.

I think it is indeed possible that I am a year off... I turned the TCS button and tried it in 3rd gear at around 50mph . It still feels the same(slower). When I put it back in drive, you can feel it kick in. Also, the TCS button turns itself back on after several minutes.<b>99 Camaro Z28 A4</b><br />R.I.P. 00 Firebird 3.8<br />14.89 @ 90, 2.03 60\'

I have a question concerning the D and OD selection. If I am driving around in D, and the transmission is actually in 3rd, and then I shift to OD without changing speed, the engine RPM drops nearly 400 rpm. I know I am still in 3rd because there is another shift when I reach 45mph. I assumed this was the torque converter locking up when shifted into OD. Is this assumption correct? The heat generated from the extra slippage in the converter would also increase transmission temps when not driving in OD. I don't see much of a performance advantage here since the converter will unlock when enough throttle is applied; I just wanted to find if my converter lockup assumption was correct :D
