  • 3.73's on A4 tranny

okay I have been searching all over the board and read all sorts of post about deciding to put in 3.42 or 3.73 gears. I'm leaning towards the 3.73 but the thing is I have a Automatic 4 speed transmission. Its a 2002 firebird with the W68 package. Not to be confused with the Y87.

I'm not even sure what gears I have in my car right now. My question is how badly will this effect my car on the highway. I'm not on it very often. When I'm going to college maybe on it for 40 minutes a day (back and forth) average. Also will take a long trip once or twice a year for like a six hour drive. Would it be like driving in gear 3 the whole time? If so I could probably deal with that.

Any help I'd appreciate. I think I want the 3.73 but don't want more cons than pros.

Read the post a few down about 3.73's in an auto, you really didn't search that much if you missed that.

I say 3.42's but other will say different, I will not be posting in this thread anymore so I don't end up fighting again. Most of the guys that tell you to run a lower ratio gear ratio don't have auto's.

If you look in your glove box and write down the codes, then go to this page, it will tell you every option your cars has come with.

These are the codes to look for in your glove box.

most likely you have 3.08's. I have an A4 auto, swapped from 3.08's to 3.42's. there was a very nice gain and is great at high speeds on the highway. Its really a great all around gear for an A4 car.

I was conservative when I made the decision on gears. I dont really drive that much, mostly a few miles back and forth to work, hell Ive only been putting like 6k a year on it. To do it again, I think I would have went with 3.73's based on the driving that I do. If I spent more time on the highway, then 3.42's.

Well I pulled my paperwork and find my print out from autotrader.com where I first discovered the car. In the comments it says it has Sport appearance package and 3800 performance package. So I think I alreayd have the posi and 3.42 gears

look for a Y87 code on the door, if you have it then you have 3.42 and posi, if you have something else like Y81, you dont have it

916topherv6. Please do keep me informed on how they work out for you.

The stickers on my door are faded to blank white stickers. So i can't read them. No info located in my glovebox either. However i did a couple burn outs and left two long skid marks so I'm positive I have Posi. Which would mean I already have the 3.42 gears.

if that is the case I want more dang it lol. 3.73 it is.

Not always true, an open diff will allow both tires to be spun. If both tires spin while in a turn then you have an lsd/posi.

If you are not goin to be doin constant highway driving, I say get 3.73's. Gas mileage will be affected though, although I don't really mind. If you are doin mostly in the city driving, it won't be that bad on gas. And yes, I have an A4... with a 3200 stall converter and LSD as well.
