I am thinking about doing this in my
1996 Camaro V6 3.08 Gears 71,000miles on the car
27,000miles on the engine
no performance parts, i want to be able to peel out more, i drove it for the first time 2/2/05 and tried peeling out and did little wheel hops on the right side, i know thats from not being limited slip, what do i need to swap out my old gears (3.08) to 3.42s?

nope, you can keep the same gears you just need a limited slip differential or posi. But if you do want 3.42 gears you can buy them off me for $80 plus shipping

With 3.08 gears, he will not be able to use his same gears (assuming he buys a series-3 carrier).

Look on ebay for a diffy out of a V8 F-Body. You can get them cheaper than that one at lmperformance.

wrongggggggggggg..except for when you said "wheel hops"..that was kinda close..what you got is called "wheel hop"..this is due to weak stamped factory suspension components instead of strong tubular ones..when i had 3.08s and factory suspension components i got it all the time as well..you do not need to change to a LSD to stop this..i would recommend a set of LCAs (lower control arms)..and a pan hard rod..you'll have happy peg legged burnouts..however..changing to a 3.42 LSD is not a bad idea..the increase in low end acceleration is great..however it will require the gears (obviously), a 3 series limited slip differential, 3 series ABS reluctor ring to keep your ABS operational, and an install kit..after the gears are installed..your PCM will then need to be recalibrated for the change in gear ratio..if not it throws of your speedometer, odometer, shift points, torque management, etc..for more info on these parts, cost, where to get them..check out my home page or try a search

no problem..for the parts..just check out my home page..it lists where i got everything and how much it cost..labor wise..the LCAs and pan hard rod can be done by anyone who can use a socket and cresent wrench..no big deal..you'll need the gears/LSD done by a pro..install is about $300..but make sure you have the resources to have the PCM recalibrated afterwards..some local chevy dealers can do this..i did it with HP Tuners..but that package runs about $500

1LE and you can't reuse the 3.08's with an lsd without the use of a spacer.

Think you've got it backwards. 3.42s could be used on an open diff with the spacer. Series 3 gears with spacer would mount to a series 2 carrier. No way to mount series 2 gears to a 3 carrier, though.
